How to wear bold makeup colours this spring

Ever bought an eyeshadow palette? Then you know exactly the colour I'm talking about - the bright, vivid one that's oh-so-pretty and vivid but you're just too afraid to use? Well, with the grey days of winter (possibly... dare we hope?) coming to a close and spring on the horizon, I’m daring you to go bold. From pretty pinks and corals to vibrant greens and blues bold colours feature big in this spring’s makeup looks. But while it’s a look we may admire on the runway or red carpet, some of us (and by “some of us” I mean me) lack the balls to try out those bold colours ourselves.

Enter Maybelline New York’s global makeup artist, Charlotte Willer, with some tips for getting over being timid.

Bucking The Trend Altogether?

Last week, Barneys Creative Director, Simon Doonan, declared “The End of Trends” on his New York Observer blog. While it is nice to think that society has developed a sudden immunity to the fashion industry's dictatorship of what is “in” and what is “out”, I have a hard time wholeheartedly agreeing with Mr. Doonan’s claim—also seems to me like he is biting the hand that feeds him….

Didn't We Get Over Overalls The First Time? Apparently Not.

Apparently, even if you try to will a trend away with all your might and ignore it with ever fiber in your being (I’m looking at your rompers and tendrils), it won’t stop until it has infiltrated the masses and rubbed its nasty self all over your business. Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration, but it is how I feel about the fact that an overwhelming number of designers, from Ralph Lauren to Chloe, to Cavalli and Gaultier, showed overalls in their spring collections. Yes, you read that right. The honky-tonk/ghetto-fabulous classic is rearing its ugly head once again, but unless you are a farmer or a professional house painter I just don’t see the appeal. Tell us what you think after the jump.

Spring Has Sprung At Joe Fresh

Last week, Joanna gave us a sneak peak at what PURE ALFRED SUNG has to offer this spring, so I thought it fitting to share the pieces I fell in love with from the forthcoming Joe Fresh collection. You’ve got to like the fact that it’s so easy to look chic on the cheap these days! Check out my favourite looks after the jump.

Trend Spotting At The Academy Awards

Well folks, the telecast might have been a complete yawn, but the red carpet gowns were enough to keep me glued to the tube for the full three hours! Time well spent if just to see the risky fashion choices that walked the usually predictable red carpet last night. There were certainly some clear-cut trends being favoured by the lovely and talented starlets at the event, however. Check them out and let us know who you though looked great (and not so great) after the jump.

Sneak Peak: MAC's Drool-Worthy Liberty of London Collection

If you are in the market for a little pre-spring pick me up, do I have just the ticket for you! From March 11th to early May, MAC Cosmetics is offering one of the most wearable bold colour collections that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Infused with popping pinks (my favourite product is the Petals & Peacock lipstick—so Malibu Barbie chic!), juicy corals and saturated purples and teals the Liberty of London collection strikes the perfect balance between the grit and glam of Londontown. See for yourself after the jump.

Is The Shorts Suit Short On Function?

With the dead of winter (fingers crossed) behind us, the spring trends are going to start popping up left and right. One of the strongest trends from last spring was the shorts suit and it will undoubtedly be reoccurring as the weather continues to warm. The question I have though, is where the shorts suit is actually a viable wardrobe option? Yes, the look was all over the runways and the glossies, but in the real world where are short shorts and a slouchy blazer the most appropriate attire?

The Return of The Tendril: Terrifying or Terrific?

The word tendril itself induces a shiver up the spine for me. The physical incarnation of this classic 90’s hair trend, however, scares me more than a world in which team U.S.A. takes gold in men’s Olympic hockey (yup, I'm still gloating). Sure, Brenda Walsh and Kelly Taylor could work the tendril like no other, but they also worked spandex bike shorts with suspenders. No one's asking us to accept that look again are they? Sound off about the tendril after the jump.

Giving A Little Fashion Credit Where It’s Due

I know a lot of ladies have strong feelings about her, but I genuinely like Kristen Stewart. She is not, however, someone I would consider to have an innate sense of style. In fact, during her greasy mullet, tied up t-shirt and ill-fitting jeans phase I would say she was subscribing to an anti-style—and not in the “I don’t give a damn, but still look impossibly cool” way.  Over the last couple weeks, however, KStew seemed to be going through a bit of a ladylike transformation—she even washed her hair and traded in her Converse for heels! See what I’m talking about after the jump.

Oprah's Cleaning Out Her Closet And You Could Score Her Castoffs

Cleaning out your makeup bag is one thing, but cleaning out your closet, well, that can just be a plain old nightmare. When your closet is as big as Oprah Winfrey’s, however, that’s when a professional interventionist comes in handy. Luckily for O, she has one on staff at her magazine, otherwise known as Creative Director, Adam Glassman. The queen of daytime has been doing just that (with the help of Glassman, naturally) and you won’t believe what she’s doing with her designer castoffs….
