Copycat: Kristen Stewart

I have to admit that I 'm usually a bigger fan of Kristen Stewart’s look when she’s done up like Bella Swan than when she is being her grubby, Joan Jett inspired self, but when I saw photos of her at the MTV VMAs I had to admit that the girl looked good.

It wasn’t just that she had washed her hair and put on a dress minus her favourite Converse All-Stars for once, but thanks to makeup artist Beau Nelson of Beauté cosmetics (www.beaute-cosmetics.com) she was simply luminous. Granted, that glow may have been enhanced by her close proximity to a certain Mr. Pattinson? Regardless of the cause Ms. Stewart looked sharp with her porcelain skin, burgundy shadowed eyes and perfect pinky nude lips, so I caught up with Beau shortly after the event to find out how we can recreate the look on our own.

Beau started by moisturizing Kristen’s face with Clarks Botanicals Marine Smoothing Cream then used Korre's Primer to create a blank canvas. He followed that up with a mix of Flouron and Harlot Liqui-gel stain from Beauté Cosmetics to the apple of the cheeks, blending with his finger tips. He went a little more heavy handed than necessary, so that when he applied Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer in Nude over top, the blush would be muted and look like a glow was coming from within. He then used Laura Mercier undercover pot #2 to conceal any redness and under Kristen’s eyes. Once the perfect base was achieved, Beau used Kanebo Sensai Loose powder to set it and then applied Kevyn Aucoin the Sculpting Powder under the cheekbones and along the jaw line to add definition to her face.

Next, it was time to make the eyes really pop. Beau layered the burgundy and deep purple shades from Dior’s Stylish Move palette over a base of black liner. Putting the colour over black allows them to maintain the shade you see in the package, rather than the lighter sheer version you get when applied directly to the skin. Beau concentrated the colour at the lash line and blended out (if you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a hundred time, you have got to blend!). Beau then lined the inner rim of the eye (tricky, but worth it for the impact) and curled lashes before applying YSL faux cils mascara to the top and bottom lashes. All it took to get the perfect shade of nude lips for K-Stew was a couple swipes of Beauté’s pink-beige gloss, Medusa.

I took Beau’s lesson to heart and put together my own version of this look with products I already had in my beauty arsenal for a party last weekend and I have to say it worked like a charm—I have never had so many comments on my eyes in my life. If only Robert Pattinson had been around, I could have tested the look’s full effect.
