Green hair never looked so good

When it comes to shampoo and other hair care products, I’ll be the first to admit that I'm pretty picky. It's not uncommon for me to spend more on products when I visit the salon than on the cut and blow dry - although it does come as a shock to my husband every time it happens.

As the Green editor for MSN.ca, I can't help but feel pressured to green my hair routine but it's hard to consider swapping my tried-and-true products for ones I know little about (even if they are eco-friendly).

In fact, the idea of letting go of my faves makes me a bit nervous. The last time I switched products was when I was trying to cut back on the cost and I ended up with flat, dull, frizzy curls that worsened as the day rolled on. Yuck!

Yet each day when I wash my hair, I know in the back of my mind how many toxic chemicals I'm washing down the drain (not to mention that I’m also absorbing them into my skin!).

With all those toxins seeping into the environment, the natural world is ultimately the one that suffers for great hair. Which has led me to ask the question: does it really have to be this way?

Plagued by thoughts of whether or not the green products would smell as nice, moisturize my hair as much or get it feeling as clean as my mainstays, I decided to give green a chance and try something that would be a little kinder to the planet.

Plenty of products have crossed our desks, but here are three great ones that I just tried:
Rusk
Rusk
Sensories Wellness Collection (Reflect Shine Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner, and Reflect Shine Enhancing Treatment): Smelled amazing, had plenty of lather (without harmful sulfates) and left my hair feeling clean, soft and shiny.

Liveclean Live Clean’s new Exotic Nectar Moroccan Collection (Restorative Shampoo and Conditioner, Smooth & Shine Cream, and Argan Oil Treatment): Reduced the number of tangles in my hard-to-brush curly hair and eliminated much of my frizz after I blew it dry.

Go Green Set HR Rusk’s ‘Go Green’ professional blow dryer and str8 iron use less energy than mainstream products but were still able to get my hair dry and stick straight in no time at all.

As a self-confessed picky individual, I’ve been amazed at how easy it has been to adopt these products into my daily regimen. Why wouldn’t I do my part for the planet if I can still have gorgeous hair as a result? Now, as the Green editor, the only question remaining is what do I do with all my old stuff?

Have you tried any eco-friendly products? Which ones are your favourites?
