Made In The Shade

Certain members of the young Hollywood set are fearless when it comes to their hair. I’m not just talking about branching out with a different style for red carpet affairs; I’m referring to their penchant for drastically altering the colour of their locks, sometimes beyond recognition. Hmmm, maybe that was their intent?  In the case of the notorious LaLa Lohan I somehow doubt it. Putting intent aside, there are certain cases where the drastic hair dying measures just aren’t doing justice to these undeniably lovely ladies, yet they keep going back for more. So, let us take a stroll down memory lane and decide which colour scheme suited which starlet best—and let’s hope they take note of public opinion next time they head to the salon!

Ashlee Simpson Wentz

I guess we will have to put her other physical transformation aside when making this judgment call, so overall I think Mrs. Wentz carries off all three shades fairly well. I feel like the brunette is slightly too dark on her, but she was going through her hard-edged rocker phase at the time, so I will cut her some slack. Ashlee reemerged as a bubbly blond for her second foray into music and while the makeover didn’t necessarily boost record sales, the new nose and more “California girl” locks did land her a husband and more interest from casting directors. As one of the residents of Melrose Place, new mom Ashlee has pumped up the sex appeal with her extra long fiery red mane and I have to say that I’m feeling it. It is the perfect complement to her nearly alabaster skin and it makes her eyes pop—two sure signs of finding your perfect shade. It’s also a serious head turner, always a plus when you’ve got a new project to promote.

My Verdict: Blond was pretty and all, but red is red hot!

Jessica Alba

I know that Perez Hilton gives her a hard time for ignoring her heritage, but when it comes to her tresses Alba really should try sticking with her Latin roots.  As a brunette she looks soft, pretty and natural—I know she’s no angel, but she looks like she could be with this hair. Alba is an undeniable beauty, but boy oh boy does this girl like to mess around with unflattering dye jobs! I’m not sure I have ever seen anyone less suited to blond hair in my life? Every time she tries it, it ends up horrendously yellow and makes her look like she had a serious accident with an at home bleach kit—and take my word, sister paid good money for that brassy hue. The red is sort of ho hum on her in my opinion; it’s neither fab, nor fug, but rather, a bit forgettable. Clearly Alba wasn’t a big fan of it either, as the one public appearance she made with scarlet locks she had it pulled back and within days she was back to brown.

My Verdict: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Step away from the bottle of peroxide Jessica and embrace the bodacious brunette babe you are.

Lindsay Lohan

No matter what your opinion of Lohan is, you have to admit that the girl was blessed with good hair. So good in fact, that it hurts my feelings a little bit that she dyes it at all.  Remember way back in her wholesome days (think pre rehab, pre Ronson and pre crazy twitter ramblings) when Linds was just this stunning young woman who wasn’t ashamed of her freckled Midwestern good looks and rocked a gorgeous natural mane that could only be classified as ginger perfection? Yah, neither did I, but luckily Mean Girls was on the other night so I saw physical proof. Lohan can admittedly pull off a variety of hair colours without much trouble. She’s a babe as a redhead, she’s still a babe with chocolate strands and she was even a babe when she went blond the first time. The real problem with Lohan is that her lifestyle has taken its toll and as of late she it looking more like her slightly haggard mother Dina, pee yellow hair et al, than the fresh faced girl we once knew and loved. My advice to dear Lindsay is hit the spa hard, perhaps invest in a little preventative botox and definitely hit that hair with an ash toner if she  is committed to that Marilyn Monroe fixation of hers!

My Verdict: A little rehab goes a long way, whether it’s for your soul, mental health or hair. Indulge in deep conditioning treatments, remove the extra long extensions, eat a sandwich and bring back the red. Hey, if they could save Britney than they can definitely save Lindsay…. let’s get Perez on that campaign asap!

Which shade do you think looks best on these ladies? What other celebrities do you think have great, or not so great, hair colour?
