Red Carpet Regrets

Usually I am all about red carpet style. Good-looking people dressed and primped to the nines in fashions that are way ahead of the curve—what better place to find inspiration for my daily personal styling crusades?  At last weeks Whitney Museum Gala in NYC, however, the red carpet was less about the upcoming hot holiday trends and more about the new influx of hot messes.

Whitney losers
Frankly, I’m concerned. Donatella Versace, Lindsay Lohan and Taylor Momsen all arrived with extra long, extra stringy, over processed yellow blond hair, heavy on the makeup and in some variation of a brash Versace gown. They looked like a trio of worse for wear sisters—surely a compliment for Versace, but for the younger two, not so much!

Momsen2 Speaking of youth, here is my biggest concern about the entire debacle: Taylor Momsen is 16 years old. I'm not even sure how one goes about making a 16-year-old look like a strung-out starlet at least twice her age, but a floor sweeping gown slit up to there paired with fishnets, six inch platform heels and a swack of dark eyeshadow is certainly a good start. Momsen where is your mom? Perhaps she really is a long lost Lohan, cause you know Dina would most certainly applaud this look. In fact, she probably wishes Lindsay had worn it.

I understand that the girl is going through her angst ridden teen years and is influenced by the likes of Courtney Love, pre Hollywood makeover, but what sane parent would let their teenage daughter walk the streets (never mind a red carpet) like this? To add insult to injury are the photos of Momsen leaving the event. Why she needed a costume change I don’t know, but why she needed to change into something even more ridiculously age inappropriate is beyond me. The fishnets were bad enough peeking out from under her floor length gown, but with the stay up band clearly visible under the hem of a too short, oversexed cocktail dress, the girl looks more like she is wearing a Halloween costume than couture.

But let us give credit where credit is due. Mischa Barton appeared to be back and better than ever (or, at least, better than anything we have seen post OC) in a midnight blue gown and fresh-faced makeup. Anyone who picks up the supermarket tabloids will know that she was in a spot of trouble a few months back, but here she is looking lovely and proving that just because your TV show gets cancelled doesn’t mean you should hide under a rock, or look like you have been for that matter.

Whitney winners
Actress Lake Bell upped the glam factor in a cherry red satin number and the adorable runway “it girl”, Chanel Iman, demonstrated why she gets paid the big bucks to wear clothes—dear god, just look at those legs. Now if either Bell or Iman would slip their stylist’s card into the hands of Miss. Momsen I could go back to enjoying my red carpet viewing without fear.

What do you think of the red carpet looks at the Whitney? Who was a hit and who was a miss in your books?  What do you think of young Miss. Momsen’s ensembles?
