Calling All Twihards
The countdown is on for opening night of New Moon (LA premier in T-minus four days people!), but frankly I’m a bit concerned about the sanity of the general population as a result of all this hype. I like Twilight as much as the next girl— alright, maybe even a little bit more than the next girl—but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the slew of “Twilight inspired” products on the market and the erratic behaviour that is stemming from them. See what I’m talking about after the jump.
Putting the pimping of the Twilight Volvos and a supposed range of sex toys aside, there is an abundance of fashion and beauty companies doing their best to cash in on the vampire craze. I love Nordstrom, it’s my favourite department store, but to their line of Twilight clothing (essentially, tween casual wear with gothic handwriting that will have gaggles of girls sporting Bella’s lack luster style) I say shame on you! An even bigger shame, however, goes to the cougar aged prowlers that keep swiping the life-sized cutouts of R. Pattz and Taylor Lautner used in the displays. Creepy ladies, just plain creepy; not to mention shoplifting is illegal. Apparently the obscene behaviour has now inspired Nordstrom to start selling the cutouts for $33 USD each (and yes, they do ship to Canada) Like I said, I'm concerned.
And then we have cosmetic company, DuWop’s, crack at the cash cow in the form of Twilight beauty. The company is best known for their Lip Venom, so it’s not really surprising they went down this road. However, adding the word Twilight and a red tint does not warrant a new product in my books. Instead of buying a blush and eye shadow palette named after your favourite female character, wouldn’t it be more fun to create a look inspired by that character with regular makeup? There is a fine line between inspiration and imitation and when you’re walking around with the word Twilight on your clothes or your makeup case, or have spent money on a piece of fine jewelry with fangs on it, I think the line has been crossed.
Update: For those of you that totally disagree with me, you might like to know that if you place an order of $50 or more on twilightbeauty.com between Friday, Nov. 20 (opening day of New Moon) and Sunday, Nov. 22 you will receive a free commemorative New Moon Lip Venom....Twihards rejoice!
Tell me what you think: Has Twilight mania gone too far? Are these products worth the money?Have you bought any Twilight merch yourself? Would a little eyeliner or a dark lip stain be a better way to show your appreciation to the Cullen clan? How bout those cutout swiping women—appalling or appealing behaviour?

As a recent Twighlight (diehard) fan, I too have to agree that the mania is going a bit overboard. When I iniatially heard there was such thing as a makeup line - I thought "wow, the poor parents that have to spend their hard earned money on this crap!"
Instead, go see the movies, buy the books and don't forget to take a peek at the new Vanity Fair - man, Rob looks so hot!

its just a movie i dont know why everybody has to jump around and scream and make a big deal out of it geez chill out there just actors trying to make money
Posted by: sarah | Nov 16, 2009 3:48:26 AM
I agree 100%. Fan of the books. Read them after the first movie which i didnt see in the theatre and can barely even recall any hype. I am so frickin sick of hearing about twilight it makes me almost not even wanna see the second one in the theatre. Whoever is promoting this movie is doing a bad job because they are turning people off of it. And i think its so funny that people are confusing the actors with the characters. Really, you wont go see twilight if rob and kristen are dating in real life?? Because you have some fantasy of rob and you together? Get a life people! I have to agree though, rob does look smokin in the vanity fair mag :)

I was actually a pretty big fan of the whole Twilight thing. But now its steered me away.
in my own opinion half the people that are making a big deal about Twilight are just trying to be like everyone else. . .their trying to find a place to belong in. Like when one fad comes in everyone has got to have it to be considered 'cool or hip' this Fad has been taken way to far. And it seems like the merchants are getting a kick out of it.

WHenever something is profitable, there will always be ppl trying to cash in on the new craze or fad and thats just the way business is. The only reason it will stop is when ppl do get sick of all the vampire related products or the market becomes too saturated

what do u know its becoming the next harry potter

I have to agree 100% with the article. They have really gone too far with the merchandise.. I love the movie(s) and the books, but yes ppl, stick to reality... It's just a movie(s), fantasy world.. I bought the books, the dvd and the Twilight soundtrack (New Moon soundtrack is really bad, makes me feel like I want to go jump off a cliff myself..) But that's as far as I'll go as to buying anything from the franchise!! Like the article said why pay top $$ for makeup when you can copy the looks with any other makeup in regular stores and the shirts, bags, blankets, etc. those I find are just awfull looking.. Would you really wear that on the night out?? I wouldn't even wear that to bed.. LOL ;o)

Twilight is SO over-rated. It's still a fairly big craze at my school. And who ever said that Twilight is becoming the next Harry Potter, you are SO wrong! Harry Potter rules. AHEM. Sorry about that, but... I couldn't help myself. ANYways, it's so crazy if go to stores like Indigo, practically the whole teen section is Twilight this and Twilight that. Disgusting.

I have to say if you want the full effect on Twilight, read the books !
Like they say the book is always better then the movie
I was kind of disapointed in all the details they left out
but I guess you have to do what you need too
I thought the movie was good, but it could have been A LOT better.
Me personaly being a Huge Twilight Fan <3 ;
things are going way out of control
everywhere you look, they are slapping Twilight on products and making money
I agree with a comment below that people are spending hard earning money on this crap
It's too much now
But Still,
I'm looking forward to seeing New Moon :P

Of course it has! They aren't even real vampires, most good vampires at least drink donated blood from hospitals, or from willing swans, they don't sparkle like Queens & look a lot sexier than Robert Pattinson.
I can think of so many Vampire books MUCH better that should have made it to the big screen, Such as Raven Hart's 'Savannah Vampire Chronicles'
If STEPHEN KING tells you your writing is terrible, then it's true Stephanie Meyer. If anyone over the age of 13, or is male & likes the Twilight series, there's something wrong.

I love Twilight, but the clothes, make-up etc.. is just too much. I agree with TT, the books are way better then the movie. What I don't understand is why all this hype towards tweens, they should not have been reading the books anyway, I felt they were to mature of a subject for young girls, parents should not have been letting their childred read the books or watch the movies. That is why these young girls are so obsessed with it and these merchandizing companies are cashing in as that is where the money is these days, you don't see grown women rushing out to buy vampire lipstick, its insane.
I will be going to see the movie, I am even looking forward to it, but people should just be leaving it to that.

I totally agree this whole Twilight thing has gone way to far. I understand the books and the movies, but do we need Twilight shirts? Twilight toys? Twilight everything? It has gone way to far!

@ Cheynne - "If anyone over the age of 13, or is male & likes the Twilight series, there's something wrong."
There's nothing wrong with what other people might consider a good piece of fiction. I happen to be one of those people you describe and I happen to like the series. There's nothing wrong in that. Fiction is fiction and I happen to like Meyer's writing.
But in regards to the article - that is going over the top. Seems like everyone wants to make a quick buck buy cashing in on Twilight. I, like other posters, will be seeing New Moon when it comes out ... but that's about it.

I love the books, I look forward to seeing the rest of the movies, but beyond that all the merchandise is a joke, I can't believe people are actually buying all that crap. I can imagine at least some of the actors aqssociated wit6h the Twilight Saga, if not all of them, think it's absolutely ridiculous as well. Don't be a mindless, consumer sheep.
Posted by: jody | Nov 16, 2009 11:57:55 AM
the merchandise isnt a joke. its great. have u tried on the lipstick . its smooth and lasts all day cuz it has a stain mixed in with it. its awsome and looks great on and ive gotten lots of compliments on the colour. the lipglss is shiney and sparkles and it itsnt yuky sticky like others i tried, where you cnat even talk. and the eye palatettes come in a comfortable compact case thats teally adorable and can be chalked up to collectors items so there. :P

The books had a following, but the series is popular for it's soft-core porn appeal. I challenge anyone to review a sampling of twilight blogs and message boards and see how many entries are under the heading "I loved In Chapter 7 when..." and how many are under "OMG!! R-Patz is SOOO Effing HOT!!"
Posted by: lo | Nov 16, 2009 1:34:35 PM
I didn't see the first movie till it was on dvd, I did read all the books and couldn't put them down and I will see the other movies (probably in the theatre after the craziness has gone down). Where I think the biggest problem with this whole series is the false sense young girls (and some older ones too) are lured into. They are thinking this guy is the perfect man and he is just an actor, it's just a character he is playing and for some he may exist in life but for some he won't. These young girls are going to spend their life in a depressed "Bella" state waiting for their perfect man and what if that doesn't happen?

@ Angel;
I was just surfing the net, and came across many articles saying that 86% of all advanced ticket sales went to New Moon, thus, breaking a new record for advanced ticket sales. I'm guessing that the movies will break many, many, MANY records. And I am considering buying some Twilight beauty, because the colors are awesome and I hear the quality is top notch.

I was at shoppers the other day, and i saw TWILIGHT MAKEUP, yep, you read it, twilight has gone wayy to far, if people want to look like people from twilight they DONT need the actual 'twilight makeup' . its a stupid movie anyway, my friend made me watch it, and i was actually laughing through most of it. never seen any movie go as far as makeup though. wow.
