Calling All Twihards
The countdown is on for opening night of New Moon (LA premier in T-minus four days people!), but frankly I’m a bit concerned about the sanity of the general population as a result of all this hype. I like Twilight as much as the next girl— alright, maybe even a little bit more than the next girl—but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the slew of “Twilight inspired” products on the market and the erratic behaviour that is stemming from them. See what I’m talking about after the jump.
Putting the pimping of the Twilight Volvos and a supposed range of sex toys aside, there is an abundance of fashion and beauty companies doing their best to cash in on the vampire craze. I love Nordstrom, it’s my favourite department store, but to their line of Twilight clothing (essentially, tween casual wear with gothic handwriting that will have gaggles of girls sporting Bella’s lack luster style) I say shame on you! An even bigger shame, however, goes to the cougar aged prowlers that keep swiping the life-sized cutouts of R. Pattz and Taylor Lautner used in the displays. Creepy ladies, just plain creepy; not to mention shoplifting is illegal. Apparently the obscene behaviour has now inspired Nordstrom to start selling the cutouts for $33 USD each (and yes, they do ship to Canada) Like I said, I'm concerned.
And then we have cosmetic company, DuWop’s, crack at the cash cow in the form of Twilight beauty. The company is best known for their Lip Venom, so it’s not really surprising they went down this road. However, adding the word Twilight and a red tint does not warrant a new product in my books. Instead of buying a blush and eye shadow palette named after your favourite female character, wouldn’t it be more fun to create a look inspired by that character with regular makeup? There is a fine line between inspiration and imitation and when you’re walking around with the word Twilight on your clothes or your makeup case, or have spent money on a piece of fine jewelry with fangs on it, I think the line has been crossed.
Update: For those of you that totally disagree with me, you might like to know that if you place an order of $50 or more on twilightbeauty.com between Friday, Nov. 20 (opening day of New Moon) and Sunday, Nov. 22 you will receive a free commemorative New Moon Lip Venom....Twihards rejoice!
Tell me what you think: Has Twilight mania gone too far? Are these products worth the money?Have you bought any Twilight merch yourself? Would a little eyeliner or a dark lip stain be a better way to show your appreciation to the Cullen clan? How bout those cutout swiping women—appalling or appealing behaviour?

TO V : It's Twilight, not Twighlight... you can't be much of a (diehard) fan

I don't get this. Yeah, I've read the books (biggest waste of time in my life, mind you) and I've seen the first film, but get serious: vampires that sparkle? Seriously? What kind of demeaning persona is this? Forget "R. Pattz"; he was NOT hot. There was only one guy worth looking at during that movie, and he unfortunately had to die: James. You know, the bad vampire that bit the weak and helpless Bella? Yeah, he was definitely worth looking at. But "R. Pattz", seriously? HE SPARKLED, for all sane vampires' sake. You want a real vampire movie? Watch Underworld. At least their Lycans didn't look like giant teddy bears at first glance when they, you know, morph. Please, guys, all you Twihards, it's just a movie, and just a guy that will never take the time of day to meet you personally.

i think it has gone way to far girls are falling in love with bloodthirsty vampires and viscious werewolves they kiss there movie posters before they go to bed! i know, my friend wouldn't have a problem with having sex with taylor lautner and she's in gr.7! i think personally that twilight fever
is really bad they should just drop it!

The Twilight craze is ridiculous. It's a book about watered down vampires and a creepily co-dependent teenage romance. (Really, no one else thought it was really creepy that he watched her sleep and her biggest concern was that she looked bad?)

I haven't read the books and have no intention of doing so, the only vampire books I ever loved were Bram Stoker's Dracula and Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I watched Twilight only because my sis borrowed it from work. I think some Twilight fans can't make the distinction between Edward and Robert Pattinson and to not see a movie because a person is or isn't doing something is stupid. Like I am a Star Trek fan and I can make the distinction between Zachary Quinto and Spock, so if I hear about Zachary Quinto dating some girl I am not gonna sell my copy of Star Trek. But I fully agree with the article the companies are taking products too far, I was in a Shoppers Drug Mart and when I saw the Twilight Venom and the color palettes I nearly threw up in my mouth. As far as I know if you like any character you can recreate their looks with regular make-up, you don't need to buy a palette with Twilight slapped on it.

wow. really?
twilight honestly makes me want to commit suicide.
a) the books are SO long and boring. i dont care that the truck is red. red and old, red old and rusty like who gives a shi*.
b) i read 30 pages of the first book and i was so bored i had to close it.
c) the movie is the biggest piece of crap ever. kristen stewart is the most horrible actress ever. she looks like she doesnt know what shes doing the whole time

I love the Twilight series, but this is SOO blown out of proportion! My mom was debating whether to let me go to see New Moon, and see the other movies, because so many people are obsessed with it. I love the books, not because the characters are vampires or anything, because I think it was written well. I think MAKE_UP!!, is very stupid for this. I love Twilight and all, but if people actually expect someone like me, and I am a diehard Twilight fan, and am right inbetween the hype, to buy this, bull crap!

Na at all i think twilight is worth all the hype have you read the books and watched twi the moviee itss EPICC!

I am not a huge twilight fan, i'm not going to lie i am excited to see the new moon movie but not enough to stand in line for 3 hours at a theatre to watch it. I'll just wait a few months and rent it where i can watch it in peace and not have to deal with people screaming and ooohing and aaahing everytime Rob shows up on the screen. I am happy that its a successful movie saga however i do agree with the article, you can only go so far with things before its TOO MUCH! I understand that all the actors are good looking in the film but thats with all the makeup and whatnot too. I cant remember who it was but someone mentioned about girls needing a reality check, that this is just a film and people trying to make money, i 100% completely agree with this statement. i really dont think that Rob and Kristen and Taylor and all the other actors are making it their life's mission to make Twilight the best thing in the world... to them this is probably just another job, i'm pretty sure they're getting sick of all the hype as well.. i know i would be.

I love twilight, but it has gone way to far. The books are amazing but the movie is not so great. Plus i dont think Rob looks anything close to being hot, I pictured Edward to be so much better looking.

As a guy, I enjoyed the books. They have a cool story. But let's get one thing straight: Stephenie Meyer is NOT a good writer. She just came up with a good story, and it happened to turn into one of the worst movies ever. She has no right dissing either J.K. Rowling OR Stephen King. I mean please, she goes all crazy because she had ONE movie made out of her book? Stephen King has had DOZENS! And seriously, I would rather a movie based on my book win an Oscar over and MTV movie award. And Robert Pattinson is not even relatively attractive. He looks like a bum!

Why is there no Twilight breakfast cereal. When you add milk it would turn all mushy and you will choke on it.

lol if you have to laugh that if 90% of the young women on earth literally 'go crazy' and sweat and shake at the 'thoughts' of these guys that are 'grown young men',
between the ages of 17-25,
well.. "DUH, like of COURSE that's OkAy... lollololol"..
but if tons of lonely, shy, insecure guys,
dream and pine for a lovely girl to marry and 'date' etc,
then..
"OMG like PeRveRt and PeDOpHiLES!!!!111ONEONE"
you people have to wake up,
all of the biggest civilizations in history fell apart and destroyed themselves,
when they became 'immoral and corrupt',
(NOT because some 'evil outside force' took them over..)
it's about to happen to you,
and indeed the whole world..
girls spend all their energy dreaming for guys they'll never meet in their life,
and guys out there are killing themselves by the dozen (never mind doing every inane thing to not feel like total lonely losers.. ),
and the parents are self-righteously moronic,
actually thinking "it's okay" and doing their daughters a *favour* LOL!!!! (?..)
anyways your days are numbered,
check up on the 'georgia guidestones',
the new age of humanity won't be comprised of insolents and ignorants...

I LOVE the books and the movie was okay...it couldv'e been worse :] But i do agree. This mania has gone overborad. I can understand posters, t-shirts, keychains, bookmarks, ect. BUT A MAKE UP LINE?!? It will probaly be crap!
I know I love Twilight and I have a corner in my room with pictures, some buttons, and t-shirts hanging up. I think that's okay, but I know a lot of people that have their rooms way more twilighty than that. I think people need to chill about this whole thing. You can love it but being OBSESSED is a whole new level!

It has gotten WAY out of control! I mean come on, it's just a movie! Go watch it in theaters if you want, go read the books, but stop making us see your Twilight obsession on your sleeve-literally! I love Jane Austen books, but I don't go around with a bonnet on my bloody head, or Jane Austen cutouts under an arm with a mall security guard chasing me! Geez people, get a GRIP!
Posted by: Tiger | Nov 16, 2009 9:13:34 PM
Well, personally I love the books and the movie in a different way as they arn't as much alike as they could be. But I still really like both, but for those who are saying its so last year, what are you 12? The saying SO LAST YEAR, is only for those who are young enough to live by the movie 'Clueless'! I love the Twilight Saga, but im not obsessed with it, not going out and buying everything that says Twilight on it! Like someone else said they are just actors trying to make a living... The thought of it is great but get real people!

i agree with whatever, leave the damn kids alone! next year there will be a new fad to pick on........ wish theyd bring xena back.....:(

Ive never seen my daughter read so much in her life and im proud of it. She likes the fact there is a love triangle. She loves Jacob.

^^I am so happy that there is ACTUALLY an article about Twilight going overboard. IT IS SERIOUSLY OVER-RATED. I do feel bad for crazy fans who refuse to marry or start a relationship with someone because they are waiting for this man so called "Edward". Going to the point of wanting to kill me when I say Edward is ugly goes beyond what i've imagined. And then this makeup line comes in and tell us to pay up using the book to attract customers is disgusting, even though it was pretty obvious that they would start something like this.
I do not have anything against people who love the movie or reading the book, but there is a limit to how much you can love this serie. As long as there is no over-reaction and that people stay in their normal zone, its fine.

Ummm...did anyone else read what "kill the goy lol" wrote? WTF is that name supposed to mean anyway? Essentially they are implying that "a new age of humanity" is on the horizon and it "won't tolerate insolents and ignorants", aka. Twilight fans in this persons mind. I'm concerned for your mental health whoever you are. And I hope that if the 'georgia guidestones' you speak of do predict the future that you aren't part of the remaining 500 million people. Your preaching open-mindedness, but your practicing prejudice against people for liking a movie franchise. Plus, your grammar is appalling, to the point of incoherence.
This comment thread has gotten way off track, so thank you to "..." for bringing it back to the matter at hand—the obscene nature of Twilight fashion and beauty ranges. If people want to spend their money on these products power to them, but the author is right, there are far more creative and less consumerist ways of expressing your appreciation for Twilight.
