Feather Hair Clips: Hooray or No Way?
If you’re looking to get noticed (and who isn't really?) one surefire way to do so is by following Eva Mendes’s lead and adding a giant feathered accessory to the side of your head. It’s a controversial move, but I think on Ms. Mendes it just might work. You be the judge after the jump.
I have mixed feelings when it comes to large hair accessories—they can go so wrong, oh so fast. In general, though, I like to support any attempt at trying something new in the style world. As long as the headdress doesn’t veer into Queen Mum territory I’m gonna give it a thumbs up. With something as attention grabbing as Mendes's clip, though, they should be saves for special occasions—times when a statement piece is called for. Maybe if Blair Waldorf has been more selective about when she wore her beloved headbands they wouldn’t have fallen out of favour so quickly?
Let’s put it this way, anything feathered is a lot of look. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to pare down the rest of your ensemble. This works on Eva because she kept her makeup clean and pretty (can we just take a moment to admire that eyebrow work as well!?) and opted for understated jewelry.
I also think that such an extravagant piece calls for fairly big hair—another controversial look (remember Ashley Greene at the New Moon premiere?) in its own right. Eva certainly has a lot of mane to work with, but for ladies with finer tresses, myself included, it's important to make sure that all that backcombing and product doesn’t become messy looking. A tidy foundation really lets this “bow” shine.
So let’s hear it: Does Eva’s feathered bow warm your heart or leave you cold? How do you feel about hair accessories in general? Too royal family for your taste? Fashion forward or costume worthy? Seen any great pieces during your retail adventures, or think you could make one yourself? Will this become the new bow headband?

I'm a fan. But agree that it should be saved for special occasions. Not sure how this would look going out for coffee with your friends... they might have trouble keeping eye contact as the bird on your head demands full attention.
