Orange You Glad I Didn’t Say Banana Was The New “It” Colour?

First things first: I never understood that joke. I mean, orange really does not sound close enough to aren’t for it to be effective. All right, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, on to the fashion element of this post. By now, all you trendsters have likely heard Pantone’s prediction that turquoise will be THE colour of spring 2010, but last week I noticed a serious drift towards the warmer side of the colour spectrum. No, I’m not talking about ravishing reds—scarlet gowns I could get behind—but not since the early nineties have I seen this much orange making the rounds. And frankly, I’m none too pleased about it.

Everybody has a hue that they just can’t handle. Maybe yours is chartreuse, or peach or, I don’t know, navy. For me, however, it has always been orange. Imagine my shocked and appalled face when I saw not one, not even two, but three of my favourite celebrities wearing the offensive shade recently. Even worse, they were trying to pass the abrasive hue off as formal wear appropriate! Ghastly, I know.

Orange Dresses

All kidding aside, orange is just a difficult colour to wear. Clearly all of these ladies are beautiful, but it seems to me that these orange dresses are wearing them, not the other way around as it should be. While I love the shape of Amber Valletta’s mini dress it seems that the colour has either rubbed off on her skin, or someone has been taking lessons from the Lindsay Lohan school of beauty—never a good idea. Let’s just say I will be crossing my fingers that this carrot-friendly colour doesn’t make its way to the major red carpet events scheduled for the coming weeks. I’m begging you red carpet walkers, put down the orange frocks and walk towards the turquoise!

Let’s discuss: Have any love for orange? What colour makes your stomach turn? How do you feel about orange on the red carpet? Wouldn’t it be better left to sportswear? Can you personally wear orange (I sure can’t)? Do you think any of these ladies can get away with the hue? Sound off below!
