Underwear As Outerwear Despair
During the spring/summer 2010 runway shows it was clear that we were in for a serious dose of boudoir inspired attire. I can’t say I was super psyched at the thought of certain women having a “fashionable” excuse to dress in a manner that would usually be deemed inappropriate (admit it, we all know a few ladies who will take this trend to sleazy extremes), but I was starting to embrace the idea for the warmer months. Now, I understand that celebrities get runway looks almost immediately after they grace the catwalk, but please ladies, could you just keep your clothes on until March at the very least!?
I can almost get behind Chloe Sevigny and Zoe Saldana flashing their Prada bras, as they were at a Prada event at the time and, well, they are both very fashion-forward red carpet dressers. Honestly, I am all for the peek-a-boo look and it is a very lovely bra, but there is just something shocking about seeing the area of chest/stomach underneath the bra. It’s like it multiplies the skin exposure by 10 because we very rarely see that area of skin off of the beach. Maybe I’m just not “getting it”, but it looks like they missed a handful of buttons on their blouses, making what would normally be quite demure ensembles look like a major malfunction. Sexy? Looks more like sloppy to me.
Granted, nothing Kim Kardashian wears really thrills me, but the transparent top (or rather what lies beneath it) she sported for New Year’s hit a new low. Maybe it’s just me, but if you are going to wear something that purposefully highlights your undergarments shouldn’t they at least be attractive pieces of lingerie? And why the not nearly supportive enough strapless Kim? Last time I checked wearing long sleeves and shoulder pads with a regular bra was fully acceptable. Am I alone on this?
The biggest underwear as outerwear offender thus far has to be Kristen Stewart (that is her in the peek-a-boo Balenciaga kilt). Showing your bra I can probably forgive, but showing your knickers, especially on purpose, is just unacceptable to me. I guess we should all just be thankful that KStew has a little bit more class than Britney, Paris and Lindsay and kept her underwear on at all. However, if that is the saving grace of your red carpet outfit it is probably time to hire a new stylist.
What do you think? Am I just being a prude or is flashing your undergarments as lame a trend as I think it is? Do you find any of these looks sexy? Do any of these ladies pull it off in your opinion? Will you be rocking the underwear as outerwear trend this spring? How will you keep it from going too far into tacky territory? Discuss!
