Copycat Coif: Anna Paquin
Sometimes, simplicity is drop-dead sexy. This was most certainly the case with Anna Paquin's Brigitte Bardot inspired half up look at the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards. Of course, Paquin's plunging neckline didn't hurt her sex appeal at all, but it was her carefree coif that really caught my eye. I caught up with Vancouver hairstylist, Carolynne Collyer, to get the lowdown on recreating the look at home. With V-day just around the corner, this might be just the look to take your night from sweet to saucy—if you know what I mean?
This look works best on straight and wavy hair types, but curly lasses can always whip out the straightening iron if they are feeling ambitious. The key here is soft (looking) volume, but feel free to adjust the amount of height to suit your occasion.
What You'll Need:
-paddle brush and/ or round brush
-blow-dryer
-volumizing mousse
-soft hold hair spray
-tail comb
-bobby pins
Get The Look:
-Start with damp hair and apply a palm size amount of
volumizing mousse (Collyer recommends Rene Furterer Anti Dehydrating Mousse) from roots to
ends. Most mousses contain alcohol, so try to find one without to
maximize softness.
-Begin by blow-drying the "fringe area"
(recession to recession) in a side to side motion using a paddle brush to
create the side swept effect.
-Flip head over and blow-dry roots first to maximize
volume. Finish by flipping back up and smoothing with
a paddle or round brush depending on the amount of curl desired
in the ends. Always ensure that the blow-dryer nozzle is pointing towards end of
strands to smooth cuticle.
-Section the top off from temple to temple, and back
comb through the crown to create more dramatic volume
by sectioning one inch sections and gently pressing the hair toward
the scalp with a tail comb. Use a soft hold hairspray on each
section to ensure hold, try Davines No. 7 Crystal Fixative Lacquer for Wizards, to add the extra allure of bakery scents on an evening of seduction.
-Smooth the outer layer of hair from each side to the
centre of the back of the head and secure by
criss crossing bobby pins. For those with a little extra flair,
after pinning the first side, grip hair from the second side with
the bobby pin, and with one quick flip create a mini french twist
and slide up on the outside of the first pin to hide both!
-Finish by using the tail comb to smooth any visible
webbing and give one more quick mist to hold it all in place
-Put on your best come hither stare and go get 'em
tiger!
