Rock’Em Sock’Em
Now that New York Fashion week has wrapped up for another
season, the fashion folks are making their way across the pond to see what
London, Paris and Milan have to offer for Autumn/Winter 2010. While plenty of
trends emerged at the New York shows (see which trends Flare magazine foresees here), most were pretty predictable—new uses of fur and leather, strong
military influences and a clear minimalist vibe. What most of us fashionists
weren’t expecting to see, however, was the abundant use of socks on the runways. Yes,
that’s right folks, socks of all shapes and sizes (not to mention colours) were
the go-to accessory for Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone, just to
name a few. See for yourself after the jump.
Edgy style stars like Alexa Chung and Chloe Sevigny have
been adding socks to their sandals for a little while now with interesting
results, but if the shows at Bryant Park are any indication, this fall, a
girl’s socks will be just as important as her shoes.
Jacobs', ankle socks paired mostly with flat brogues had distinctly prim vibe to them, while Alexander Wang added Cher Horowitz worthy thigh-highs to his very tailored pinstriped looks for surprisingly sexy results. My favourite use of socks, however, was at the Rag & Bone show, where the designers opted for traditional knee socks embellished with thick knit trims (often matching larger knit pieces as seen in photo). A little bit sweet, a little bit outdoorsy and playing perfectly into the heavily layered feel of the whole collection. I just love the look of them, especially paired with tough lace-up boots.
I know that come fall I will start looking into building up
a bit of a sock wardrobe, but what do you think of the look? Worried that the
socks and sandals thing will go terribly wrong in the hands of the
unfashionable? Think thigh-highs are better left in 1995? Already coming up
with ways to work socks into your regular look? Discuss!
