So You Think You Can Design?

I understand star power. I get that certain celebrities have a built-in fan base that retailers are interested in tapping into. What I can’t wrap my head around is how and/or why just because someone is famous it's assumed that they are capable of designing a fashion line? In certain cases, like say, Gwen Stefani with L.A.M.B. or Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen with The Row and Elizabeth & James, these stars have proven their talent. These ladies all had an inherent personal style to begin with, though. What about the “celebrities” that couldn’t put an outfit together on their own to save their life? Just because Avril Lavigne can sing, does not mean that she can dance or act and it most certainly doesn’t mean that her name should be slapped onto a clothing line….

Kardashian I’m sure that Kim Kardashian is a sweet girl. I’m not sure why she’s famous, but she seems nice enough on her unfortunate television program. Her style, however, I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy. In my opinion, it is the perfect mix of too tight, too short and all together too tacky. Imagine my surprise then, when I learned that Kardashian was collaborating with Bebe on a Fall 2010 line that was shown at New York Fashion Week last Tuesday. Actually, all three Kardashian sisters are responsible for the line, but the other two are even less noteworthy than Kim and she’s the one that showed up at the debut wearing this beyond fugly ensemble.

If Kim’s unflattering hooded dress (seemingly made of gym-clothes-worthy cotton) complete with an ill-fitting vinyl bustier and finger gloves are any indication of the caliber of design we can expect from the Kardashians for Bebe collection then shoppers should beware. It seems that to the Kardashians “sassy” is often misconstrued as cheap.

Let’s discuss: Are you buying what the Kardashians are selling? What do you think about the whole celebrity designer thing? Think maybe they should just stick to whatever talent made them famous in the first place? What if they are just famous for being famous like Kardashian, Paris Hilton or Heidi Montag? Are you more inclined to buy something if a celebrity you admire has their name attached? Are you as frightened by the Kardashian line as I am? Sound off below!
