Super-High Buns: Super Hot or Super Not?

Back in November we saw the beginning of a new trend in bun placement happening. First there was Rachel Bilson, followed by Cameron Diaz (who personally inspired me to try the look) and then the lovely January Jones at the GQ Man of the Year awards, all moving their updos to the crowns of their heads. This past week, though, there has been a massive surge in super-high bun activity on the fashion scene—sometimes with awesome results and sometimes, well, not so much...

HighBuns
In my opinion, the high buns at the successful end of the spectrum are those that are done in a tidy, refined way. Kate Bosworth was the picture of ballerina perfection last week at a Chanel event (to see what Hits & Disses thought of her whole look

Nicole Richie’s look is a bit more haphazard, but still oozes elegance. Her heavy bangs and layered tendrils keep things from looking too forced and allow Richie to maintain her signature “undone” style.

The high bun got a little bit freaky on Shenae Grimes and just plain weird on Mena Suvari this past weekend at New York Fashion Week. Grimes looks like she spent so much time shellacking her face with makeup that there just wasn’t a moment left to deal with her hair. The purposefully messy bun is a look better left on the high school volleyball courts than at a fashion show.  As for Suvari, I’m not even sure how or why she was invited to Fashion Week (has she even been in a movie since American Pie?) but showing up with that too-high spiky mess is one sure-fire way to make sure the organizers don’t make the same mistake next season.

Clearly, the super-high bun is a risky choice that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. What do you think the key to a successful high bun look is? Which of these ladies wore the look best in your opinion? Why do you think these looks work/don’t work? Will you be giving the high bun a try? Already a fan; how do you keep it out of “granny’s drinking” territory? Discuss!
