Beauty "Haul" Videos: Love Them Or Loathe Them?
Being part of the YouTube generation can be both a bane and
a blessing. On the upside, you can find pretty much anything you want with just
the click of a button (it can be a great learning resource), but on the
downside, we waste a lot of time (and likely brain cells) watching asinine clips.
There’s a newish genre of YouTube videos that I stumbled upon recently and I
can’t quite decide if they are the most genius thing to ever happen to the
beauty industry or the most mind numbingly boring thing to ever hit the Internet?
Give us your take after the jump.
Following closely in the footsteps of the makeup tutorial
videos—which I personally think are genius if you are looking to master a
certain look—is the “beauty haul” video. If you are not quite sure what I'm going on about, check out a few examples here, here and here. Most of these involve a young lady,
usually with much too much makeup on, showing the viewer the beauty products
they recently bought and going on about how gorgeous these products are (though
mostly without any helpful critiques). Frankly, I don’t really get how holding
up an eyeshadow and saying, “oh look how gorgeous it is” is any more helpful to
potential purchasers than walking into the drugstore and looking around, but to
each their own I suppose.
It seems to me that if I go looking for beauty advice on the
Internet I would want to receive it from someone whose look I admire—much the
same way you want your hairdresser to have good hair, non? Maybe that’s the
whole point? You go searching through the haul videos until you find someone
who has a similar look to your own so you know that the products that work on
her might also work on you? Then again, this could be a stretch. Maybe these
videos are just about pleasing really self-important people that feel like
they should be the next YouTube video sensation? Regardless of their intent, these haul videos are strangely addictive. Who knew that looking at what other
people bought could be so captivating?
Let’s discuss: Are you a fan of the "beauty haul" video? Know
of any really good ones? Maybe you make haul videos of your own and can shed
some light on the reasoning behind them? Strangely compelled to go watch a few?
Think they are the best/worst invention since sliced bread? Sound off below!
