Bucking The Trend Altogether?
Last week, Barneys Creative Director, Simon Doonan, declared
“The End of Trends” on his New York Observer blog. While it is nice to think
that society has developed a sudden immunity to the fashion industry's
dictatorship of what is “in” and what is “out”, I have a hard time
wholeheartedly agreeing with Mr. Doonan’s claim—also seems to me like he is
biting the hand that feeds him….
I can definitely see the point that Doonan was trying to
make in his article—some things and some designers truly are timeless—but I’m
going to have to say that I don’t think trends are going anywhere any time
soon. Doonan seemed shocked that despite their “out-ness” New York’s most
fashionable were all sporting Uggs during February’s snowstorm. You know what
Simon, that doesn’t mean these women are ignoring trends, it means that it’s
snowing and they would like to wear warm footwear that won’t cause them to
topple over into a snowdrift!
I will agree with Doonan’s suggestion that people are
wearing what they like more frequently than in past decades, but if trends are
dead, why do we see multiple interpretations of the same theme on different
runways every fashion week? Why is it then, that with every season I stare into
my closet and am faced with a stale wardrobe? Why is it that right now, at this
very moment, I can’t stop thinking about acquiring some beautiful floaty
chiffon pieces in nudes and neutrals so I can start adapting the “soft” look
that is going to be everywhere this spring? It’s because it’s a trend. And you know
what, there is nothing wrong with that. I’m not suggesting that the only way to
look stylish and cute is to follow trends. In fact, when it comes to trends
like overalls, crop tops and the tendril, I think they have quite the
opposite effect on a woman’s appearance. But that’s sort of the beauty of the
whole trend theory: it’s completely up to you whether you embrace a look and
how you make it your own. For Doonan, a man whose livelihood depends on selling
clothes, to suggest otherwise just seems slightly absurd to me.
Let’s discuss: What do you think of Doonan’s proclamation of the end of trends? Am I alone in my feeling that a wardrobe just screams for a bit of freshening up each season? Am I also alone in the fact that I wear Uggs when it snows, style be damned? Do you follow trends at all? If not, do you still believe they exist? Sound off below!
