Didn't We Get Over Overalls The First Time? Apparently Not.
Apparently, even if you try to will a trend away with all
your might and ignore it with ever fiber in your being (I’m looking at your
rompers and tendrils), it won’t stop until it has infiltrated the masses and
rubbed its nasty self all over your business. Ok, that’s a slight exaggeration,
but it is how I feel about the fact that an overwhelming number of designers, from Ralph Lauren to Chloe, to Cavalli and Gaultier, showed overalls in their
spring collections. Yes, you read that right. The honky-tonk/ghetto-fabulous
classic is rearing its ugly head once again, but unless you are a farmer or a
professional house painter I just don’t see the appeal. Tell us what you think
after the jump.
Seriously. Did we learn nothing from the TLC/Kris Kross
phase? Baggy overalls with one strap hanging down is simply not a good look—I
don’t care who’s designing it. In fact, there aren’t too many ladies out there
whose figures are enhanced by any sort of oversized clothing. Sure, the
occasional trapeze dress can look charming on a supermodelesque stick insect,
but let’s be honest; those ladies are few and far between when it comes to the
general population. I don’t even care if you go all prim and proper with your
overalls and wear them closer to the body and with both straps up. I’m still
not having it.
I get that what goes around comes around in fashion and I
also get that Ralph Lauren in the grandfather of Americana and designs with a historical esthetic in mind. However, what I don’t get is why looks that
were completely unflattering the first time around keep being given another
chance? Here’s a novel concept: why don’t designers try designing something
new! Groundbreaking, I know.
But enough griping from me; What do you think of the return
of the overalls? Are you ready to embrace this look all over again? If so, are you a
farmer? I kid, I kid. Think there is any possible way to make these babies flattering on real
women? Tired of seeing the same cyclical trends marching down the runways at
what seems like rapid speed? Sound off below!
