How to wear bold makeup colours this spring

Ever bought an eyeshadow palette? Then you know exactly the colour I'm talking about - the bright, vivid one that's oh-so-pretty and vivid but you're just too afraid to use? Well, with the grey days of winter (possibly... dare we hope?) coming to a close and spring on the horizon, I’m daring you to go bold. From pretty pinks and corals to vibrant greens and blues bold colours feature big in this spring’s makeup looks. But while it’s a look we may admire on the runway or red carpet, some of us (and by “some of us” I mean me) lack the balls to try out those bold colours ourselves.

Enter Maybelline New York’s global makeup artist, Charlotte Willer, with some tips for getting over being timid.

MNY_FW_Feb10_MAngel_089-(2) “That colour is the colour you should be using to have fun with your face,” Willer said at a recent event, where she showed off some fresh, lovely ways to incorporate pops of colour into your everyday look (think gorgeous red lips, healthy flushed cheeks, vivid lower eyeliner – check out the eyes she did for the Michael Angel show!). “Women in this country tend to wear all neutrals and everything looks ashy.”

So how to break out of the neutral rut? Just have fun, says Willer. She points out that the beauty of buying drugstore makeup is that it’s not a huge investment financially – so you can buy a bunch of shades to play around with and see what works. “Don’t be afraid to try things you think might look good,” she says. Willer recommends that you do your playing in natural daylight (yes, even for nighttime looks) and that you take a picture of yourself (no flash) to judge what works.

And if you’re still gun-shy to leave the house, you can ease into colour by blending. Slather your lips with lipbalm and then use your finger to dab on a red lipstick (Willer used Colour Sensational in Very Cherry. And if you missed it, here’s her amazing tip for trying on lipsticks). And for eyes, go with a coloured shadow but blend, blend, blend. Trust me… I was actually bold enough to leave the house this morning wearing blue eyeshadow! Quad-eye-studio-(2)

Are you loving spring’s bold colours as much as I am? Do you wear colourful makeup or mostly stick to neutrals? Where are you most likely to go bright? Eyes? Lips?
