The Return of The Tendril: Terrifying or Terrific?

The word tendril itself induces a shiver up the spine for me. The physical incarnation of this classic 90’s hair trend, however, scares me more than a world in which team U.S.A. takes gold in men’s Olympic hockey (yup, I'm still gloating). Sure, Brenda Walsh and Kelly Taylor could work the tendril like no other, but they also worked spandex bike shorts with suspenders. No one's asking us to accept that look again are they? Sound off about the tendril after the jump.

MichelleTrachtenberg Now, I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with some face-framing fringe. I feel quite the opposite, in fact. The problem here lies with the decision to select a single piece of hair on an otherwise bang-free updo, curl it pretty deliberately and then just let it hang there. All we need now is a few clumps of babies breath and we can all look like we belong in a very sad 70’s prom dress—not usually an ideal style statement, in my opinion.

While Michelle Trachtenberg narrowly avoided the dreaded “crisp curls” at a premiere last week, there is just something a bit too try-hard about the tendril (granted, that may also have something to do with the Dynastyesque beading on her dress). This look is certainly a far cry from the minimalist and simply chic styles that have dominated the last decade.

Let’s discuss: Are you ready to embrace the tendril once again or are you living in fear of this try-hard trend? Will you be rocking the lone curlicue in coming months? When’s the last time you sported this look? Was the original 90210 your inspiration at the time? Am I overreacting here or are you as terrified as I am? Sound off below!
