Forget Counterfeit Handbags—Now Shopping Bags Are Fake, Too!

IStock_000018216419XSmall

As I scramble with my Christmas shopping, carefully choosing handmade, locally manufactured goods, shoppers on the other side of the world are doing the same. No big surprise, right? But apparently there is one key difference: while I'm proudly boasting about my conscious effort to avoid the big retailers (and I'm doing so quite successfully, I might add), in China shoppers are apparently using counterfeit shopping bags to disguise their local buys as designer chic.

This is so bizarre to me. I get the reusable bag thing - canvas sacs that reduce waste and fold up into your purse for constant back-up, absolutely - but can you even imagine strolling down the street holding a fake Hermès shopping bag with your gym clothes inside? I mean, if you can afford to shop at Hermès and want to use the bag after, then go for it, I suppose. Feels a bit showy, but they are really well-made and I'm all for reusing. To go to the effort of buying a fake version online and then carrying it around like a fraud, however—that I don't get. Imagine getting busted? How embarrassing.

Regardless, it's happening; and sellers are even suggesting buyers pick them up in bulk, which goes beyond personal use and nudges at the idea of fraud. Umm, Merry Christmas?

Have your say! Do you save or reuse designer shopping bags for personal use? Would you ever buy a fake?
