E-Retailers Capitalize On Drunk Shoppers

IStock_000015054304XSmall

Nothing says "happy holidays" like shopping and whiskey! And according to The New York Times, online consumers are combining the two for a tipsy treat that lasts year round.

Gilt Groupe, an online retailer new to Canada, told the newspaper they are adding more sales at 9pm to accommodate their increased night traffic. EBay also reported their busiest time of day at 6:30 - 10:30pm. Given the post-work timing, it's a fair assumption that many shoppers may be unwinding with a drink or two as they click, and the Times has easily uncovered culprits who were willing to admit to their inebriation.

Self-Cleaning Clothes

IStock_000015049881XSmall
Apparently researchers in China have developed a new solution to tedious laundry: self-cleaning clothes. That's right, the Jetson age is truly upon us.

Using a chemical called titanium dioxide, a coating can be applied to the outside of cotton materials causing them to self-clean, while removing stains and odours. The reaction takes place when the coating is exposed to sunlight and proved very successful in testing.

Fast Fashion Unravelled

20100911_zaf_c43_060

This month CBC's Q has been featuring a brilliant fashion series called "UNZIPPED". Today's segment on fast fashion feels especially pertinent given that it's the busiest time of the year for consumerism. Host Jian Ghomeshi invited Lucy Siegle, author of To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World to join him live from Wales and their conversation left a few talking points that I would love to continue here.

The Best and Worst Dressed Celebrities of 2011

20110719_kza_ka8_13231BEST DRESSED: Emma Stone
Few stars are as flawlessly dressed as Emma Stone. Since she popped up on the celebrity radar, the ginger-haired starlet has made nothing but bang-on choices. From colourful tunics to Hollywood parties, skinny jeans and booties while on-the-run, and glamourous gowns on the red carpet, this funny girl clearly takes her wardrobe very seriously.

2011 Year In Review: Pippa Middleton's Fruitful Ass(et)

20110429_jus_e58_463

Pippa's bum was rather on display as she carried her sister's train into Westminster Abbey at the Royal Wedding, sparking wide-spread admiration.

Pippa Middleton's derrière was the gift that kept on giving in 2011. The surprise star of the Royal Wedding, her Alexander McQueen-wearing tush became a subsequent headline for months to follow. Even this week, eight months after its grand display, one tweet read "Whose bum is better? Kate's or Pippa's?"

Kate Moss Accused of Copying Herself

20111128_kza_kp7_377
I know from previous posts that many of you dislike Kate Moss, but I love her—let's leave it at that. Beyond my love/your hate, however, I wonder what your objective opinion is on her latest news story: the British model is being accused of copying none other than herself.

One Size Fits All Gifting

IStock_000007550051XSmall

Last week my friend did a pop-up shop at a second temporary location for her single retail store. She needed an extra set of hands, so I decided to flex my retail muscles and hit the sales floor.

It was actually a lot of fun; I really enjoyed chatting with customers and helping them shop. This time of year, there are two main goals in mind—fancy dresses for Christmas parties and gifts for loved ones. Of those two categories, two customers stood out: one young woman who was searching for the perfect little black dress and a man who wanted a few handfuls of items to stuff in his wife's stocking.

Elizabeth Taylor Auction Breaks Records—What Would You Bid On?

20111201_kza_ka8_13148
This week Christie's International has been auctioning off the estate of Elizabeth Taylor and there is no ceiling to what bidders are willing to pay for the late actress' possessions.

Her bridal gown from wedding number two to Richard Burton (they famously married twice) sold for $62,500 and Kim Kardashian topped that bid on three diamond/jade bangles for $64,900 (show-off). The fashion auction alone set a Christie's record at $2.6 million.

Forget Counterfeit Handbags—Now Shopping Bags Are Fake, Too!

IStock_000018216419XSmall

As I scramble with my Christmas shopping, carefully choosing handmade, locally manufactured goods, shoppers on the other side of the world are doing the same. No big surprise, right? But apparently there is one key difference: while I'm proudly boasting about my conscious effort to avoid the big retailers (and I'm doing so quite successfully, I might add), in China shoppers are apparently using counterfeit shopping bags to disguise their local buys as designer chic.
