What The Colour Red Could Be Saying About You

IStock_000016651927XSmall

Some of the most iconic moments in the history of popular culture have been dressed in red. Movies like Pretty Woman, Moulin Rouge, and The Matrix all come to mind, while musicians from Eighties star Chris de Burgh to present day's Lana Del Ray have sung about their love of ladies in red. This is no mistake. According to a new study, our attraction to the colour is innate—regardless of the fit, men were repeatedly found to be more attracted to women wearing red clothes.

Do You Feel Unattractive Without Makeup?

IStock_000017208479XSmall

Lately, I feel like makeup makes me look old - eye makeup in particular - and I can't really explain why. It just happened that one day I started to pile on the eye shadow and realized that I liked the before better than the after.

It's ironic really, since makeup is supposed to be the cure to covering up age spots, wrinkles, and an increasingly dark-meets-puffy under eye that I now refer to exclusively as "punch face". My skin, however, just doesn't wear the textures the same and the concealer I've been wearing since I was 16 breaks apart in my wrinkles. Instead, I find that post-cleanse, with my tinted sunscreen and a load of moisturizer on, is when my complexion looks its best.

Oscar Hairstyles Stolen From The Fall '12 Runways

20120226_kza_ka2_414Emma Stone wearing a hot fall hair trend at the Oscars: the deep side part.

Celebrities jumped ahead a season for Oscar weekend, surging past spring trends and dipping into what's new for fall. With the autumn/winter shows on and spring trend reports far in the past, who can blame them? These three hairstyles are the ticket to celebrity and runway approved style.

The Deep Side Part
As seen at: Calvin Klein Fall '12
Celebrity adapter: Emma Stone
With such an attention-getting bow adornment on her dress, Emma Stone decided to tailor in her coif, stealing fall's most sophisticated hairstyle: the deep side part. Borrowing this look from Calvin Klein, A.L.C., Jason Wu, and more, Stone gave her look a modern edge. Even more fitting for fall? Slick the part sideways with a nearly wet-looking finish.

OSCARS 2012: Style Lessons From The Stars

From left, Rooney Mara in Givenchy, Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton, and Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford.

I could tell you my picks for the best dressed (Michelle Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Rooney Mara) and I could run through a few of my choices for the worst (foremost Melissa McCarthy), but let's be honest: it's all in the eye of the beholder. So let's instead take a look at some style lessons we can all agree on, and there was plenty to learn from last night's red carpet.

LESSON #1: Sometimes white is the boldest colour
There was a time when any colour paler than pink was reserved for the bridal aisle, but white has now taken a leading role on the red carpet. Last night it dominated dressing some of the most covetable actresses in Hollywood like Rooney Mara in Givenchy, Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford - incidentally two of my picks for best dressed - as well as Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture. There's something about an all white look that's formal, fresh, and unexpected.

Why So Glum Milan Fashion Week?

20120223_kza_ke1_964
Prada Fall/Winter 2012

Milan Fashion Week is depressed; or at least it appears to be as black silhouettes slink down its runways. Arguably Italy's sad economic state is to blame (as they say, fashion is a reflection of the times) and the solemnity is seeping into both the clothing and the beauty looks.

Too-Tight Clothing Could Be Causing More Damage Than You Think

IStock_000006382975XSmall

If your jeans are bursting at the seams, you could be damaging a whole lot more than your dignity. According to one neurologist interviewed for the Wall Street Journal, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve that runs from the abdomen to the outer thigh can be compressed by overly tight waistlines causing a condition called meralgia paresthetica. Apparently this is an extremely common occurrence especially seen in professions where belts and holsters are worn, like police work, but it's easily being adopted by skinny jean-lovin' stylistas.

Tragedy Continues: Whitney Houston's 'The Bodyguard' Costume Up For Auction

20120215_zaf_u99_598
Just days after her untimely death, some of Whitney Houston's clothes are already  hitting the auction block. Jewelry, a vest, and a black velvet dress worn by the late singer in her hit film The Bodyguard will be sold to the highest bidder next month, according to celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien.

"You buy items just like a stock. Buy at the right time and sell at the right time, and they just increase in value," Julien said in a (cold-hearted) statement to the Associated Press.

Do Mainstream Market Wears Belong On Oscar's Red Carpet?

20120213_zaf_u99_274Michelle Williams at the BAFTAs in custom H&M.

Even though red carpets are traditionally littered with satin trains and sequins, there are no exact rules. I mean, if Meryl Streep showed up to collect an Academy Award in her pyjamas, they would certainly give her the stage.

Over the years some starlets have happily bent the rules, for example Sharon Stone's infamous GAP turtleneck for Oscar in 1996, which she followed up with the mega-retailer's white men's shirt paired with a Vera Wang skirt in 1998.

Retired at 10? Cindy Crawford's Daughter Steps Away From Modelling, At Least For Now

20110708_kza_kf3_338That's one heck of a gene pool...

Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford, recently made headlines for her modelling debut at the tender age of 10. The Cindy look-alike was hand chosen to front Versace's new line for kids and her mom agreed, stating at the time that she was "so proud of her".  Less than a month later, however, it appears as though we may not see Kaia pose again for some time.

The model mogul told The Daily Front Row that, at this point, her daughter is too young to pursue a career in front of the camera. She does feel as though Kaia was the right choice for the Young Versace shoot, but allowing it may have had more to do with Cindy's relationship with Donatella than a desire to push modelling on her daughter. "I think Donatella thought it would be fun because I had worked with Versace so much in the eighties and nineties," Cindy stated. "She shot with Mert and Marcus, and I thought if she’s ever going to do anything, that’s about as good as it gets."

Celebs I'd Love To See Go Brunette

20120212_kza_km0_176
Few people can bounce from dark to light hair, yet celebs - mostly due to movie roles, I suppose - seem to make the switch all the time. For many, it works out shockingly well. For others, however, not so much.

Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, and Nicole Ritchie are just a few of the blonde celebs who have worn brown well - really well, in fact. But there are a few more names that I would love to add to that list.
