Kelly Osbourne's Emmy Mani Cost How Much?!

Wenn5918248   Screen Shot 2012-09-27 at 12.52.02 PM

Nail art has been happily embraced by women everywhere looking for a fun way to accessorize, and over the past few seasons of runway shows and red carpets, it's become clear that the possibilities are endless.

The latest craze over the last few weeks has been the unveiling of new 3-D designs. CND's oyster pearls at Binetti blew my mind and I love the new use of clear tips for an unexpected twist on the classic french manicure. The Caviar mani has also been gaining some copycats with pearl-like micro-beads and chunky gems. The look is extravagant and - according to Kelly Osbourne's Emmy admission - when using the real thing, the cost is exorbitant.

Art Project Questions The Beauty Of Symmetry

Mzl.tskcymoh.320x480-75
Beauty is such a subjective thing, but as humans, we have a hard time grasping the subjective. To aid in this, science long ago developed a means to measure beauty, suggesting that symmetry is the key; therefore the more symmetrical your face is, the greater the appeal. This theory certainly plays out when it comes to some of the most successful supermodels of our time: Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, and Christy Turlington, in particular, have all been heralded for left matching right. But one artist felt it was time to put this beauty myth to test.

Fall's Hottest Accessory: A Fluffy White Cat

Choupette-et-karl-lagerfeld-posent-pour-grazia

Artists have embraced the kitsch of fluffy white cats for years now, and fashion's finally taken note. Plush kitties are emerging as the ultimate accessory for fall, with Karl Lagerfeld's Choupette leading the pack. She's been at the heart of several editorials in the last few months and currently gracing the cover of Grazia. At just over one year old, she's even been at the centre of a cheeky Net-a-Porter video, purring up a storm, and rumour has it there will be a knit Chanel bag named after the spoiled feline.

The Careful Calculation Behind Red Carpet Style

Wenn5918503
It may be cruel, but I love to disillusion people when it comes to fashion. For instance, no you can't just shop in the fashion closet when you work at a fashion magazine and heck no red carpet gowns aren't shopped for off the rack. Weeks - in some cases, months - of planning goes into those Emmy gowns we all saw this past weekend, which is why I sleep well at night despite my harsh judgements over in Hits and Disses.

Pregnant Model Walks The Runway

Mfw_pin_up_stars_arrivals_and_catwalk_11_wenn4093385
In the past we've seen models return to the runway in record time post-baby. Heidi Klum famously found her way back to the Victoria's Secret catwalk just five weeks after giving birth to her little girl Lou, and pushing the envelope even further, VS Angel Alessandra Ambrosio strut her stuff two months into her second pregnancy last fall.

Well now Italian model Raffaella Fico has upped the ante, showing off her six-month-along belly at Milan Fashion Week this weekend and not in a dress or pant suit either, but a skimpy bikini.

One Third Of Women Say Shopping Stresses Them Out

IStock_000006413485XSmall
Apparently retail therapy is a myth—or at least therapeutic only for a select few. A study conducted by British online retailer Marisota.co.uk revealed that one third of women actually hate shopping.

Among the greatest complaints were long lineups for fitting rooms, aching limbs, rude or intimidating sales staff, and ill-fitting clothes. I'm sure we can all relate, but I also think it's a shame that these fixable issues are turning women away from something I love so dearly.

How Far Will Diane Kruger Go For Fashion?

20120527_zaf_p34_462
The Dior Couture gown that required bathroom surgery.

My favourite stylista, Diane Kruger, recently revealed the lengths at which she will go to for fashion. At the Calvin Klein show in New York, the blonde-haired blue-eyed actress told People Magazine that while she was at the Cannes Film Festival in May she spent an entire hour getting fitted into a Dior Couture gown.

And You Thought La Mer Was Expensive...

OB-UO268_0913la_G_20120913055351

I have a few rules when it comes to buying expensive goods. Typically, I run through a checklist as follows: Will it go out of style? Will I wear it often enough to get my money's worth? Will I be able to enjoy it for years to come? And that last question usually means that other than plane tickets (hello!) consumables are off the list. In other words, I'm not the girl to buy a $700 bottle of wine.

If I were that girl, I might entertain the latest in luxury skincare: Shiseido has developed a $13,000 blend of moisturizer.

Blake Lively's Enormous Engagement Ring Revealed

Blake_ryan_116449677
Unsurprisingly, People has obtained a photo of Blake Lively's engagement ring. The Lorraine Schwartz design boasts an impressive light pink gagillion karat diamond. (The exclusive is with Martha Stewart Weddings who will reveal the true size in December.)  But this honkin' piece of jewelry prompts an interesting question: Is bigger really better?

Would you buy sexy lingerie from a man?

IStock_000005958137XSmall

Recently close to 100 lingerie shops were shut down in Saudi Arabia by the country's labour ministry because of male staff members. No, not male staff members doing ______ - that's the end of the story - they were shut down because some of the staff was male. This is all in an effort to promote female employment, since workplace segregation laws which don't allow women to work in the same offices as men, have created a 30% unemployment rate for Saudi women.

While I clearly support women in the workplace, I'm not entirely sure how shutting down the shops opens up any job opportunities. Now there are just unemployed women and men, no? But despite the cultural implications here, when I first read about this, my fashion-centric brain looked past the heart of the story and immediately thought, "who buys lingerie from a guy anyway?"
