Fashion Recap: The 2013 Golden Globe Awards

My pick for best dressed: Kerry Washington.

It was a night to remember, mainly thanks to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's brilliant hosting skills at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Unfortunately the fashion didn't quite hold a candle to their spot-on banter and many dresses fell short of the usual Hollywood standards. Where was the Tom Ford white cape à la Gwyneth Paltrow, or the canary yellow Valentino à la Cate Blachett? That über-special stand-out dress forgot to show up to the party.

My absolute favourite of the night was Kerry Washington's Miu Miu. Embellished with blue cast crystals in peacock feather patterns, the retro-inspired look took a modern turn with her sleek straight bob cut. This felt like a modern interpretation of the Twenties, which we're about to see much more of. Julianne Moore's graphic Tom Ford also made a strong statement. The black and white colour-blocked look was well accented by her sixties 'do and crystal drop earrings. Kate Hudson was also a stand-out in gold embellished Alexander McQueen and Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery opted for gorgeous gild, as well, while Marion Cotillard kept the glitz to a minimum so that her simple vibrant orange Dior dress could do all the talking.

As for the worst looks of the night, I couldn't take my gaze off the saggy boob panels in Jessica Chastain's ill-fitting Calvin Klein, nor could I wrap my head around Sienna Miller's flower power 3-D Erdem. Jennifer Lopez's appliqué covered Zuhair Murad looked worthy of a triple salchow on the ice, rather than a red carpet, but the ultimate in tackiness came thanks to Halle Berry. Her "La Lune" printed Versace looked like an undone mishmash of silk scarves hand-painted by  a beginner's silkscreening class. It was truly one of the worst dresses to ever cross the threshold of an awards show.

Overall there was a sea of red and creamy blush colours, fishtails swoshed through the crowds, and see through panels slipped into many a look. One can only hope that this was the tame entry to awards season, so that come Oscar we'll be ready for over-the-top fashion fodder.
