Golden Girl: Metallic Hair Is Within Our Reach

IStock_000012887432XSmallOver the past few years we've seen rainbow coloured hair go from a celebrity stand-out look to a real-life trend embraced by all. But while it may seem sci-fi to have your little sister sharing lavender locks with Kelly Osbourne, new advances in hair colour are about to make the rainbow look as boring as brown.

Scientists have uncovered a new way to successfully dye hair gold. The only problem is, it's not quite as easy as Nice 'n Easy.

They are describing the process as "the first synthesis of fluorescent gold nano particles inside human hair," according to the American Chemical Society. The process apparently involves soaking white hairs in a solution of gold compound where they will begin to turn a pale glittery yellow as the nanoparticles are absorbed. Eventually, if left soaking, the hair will turn a dark brown.

Testing began in the hopes that the deposited nanoparticles could serve as electrodes, but the stunning aesthetic couldn't be denied.

Once the big beauty brands get wind of these advancements, we'll no doubt see an investment in research and development to try and bring this look to a salon near you.

Have your say! Would you dye your hair gold?
