Guest Post: How (Not) to Attend Fashion Week

2009-02-08_18520418_photo_by_Jimmy_Hamelin_ca_va_de_soi
Erin Cardiff is the Senior Editor for Bing Shopping. She is in Montreal this week and decided to see what Montreal Fashion Week is all about. Here's her take on the whole scene:

Since it’s one of the most beautiful and easily the most fashionable city in Canada (find me another city that makes winter clothes look good), Montreal seems like a great place to try out fashion week. The city lights up with Semaine Mode Montreal for a week each February. It’s meant to be a more fun and less intimidating week than in New York or Paris, but still packed with high fashion shows jammed full with pretty clothes and fashionable people.

… And, for the first time ever, me - who does not have a clue about anything related to fashion.

My Top Denim Picks And The Case For High-Waisted Jeans

When I'm not writing about fashion and beauty, I'm out on the field shooting fashion and beauty videos. Often times I'm filming behind-the-scenes and in order to stay out of the way, I crouch, squat, and bend in every which direction. I recently realized in doing this that I was constantly yanking up my low-waisted jeans to make sure everything was covered up. Beyond a bum-crack being unattractive, I figure it's also particularly unprofessional.

The yanking was getting a bit distracting, not to mention annoying and potentially offensive to those who had to watch, so I set out to my favourite Canadian retailer Aritzia last week to buy a proper pair of jeans. A variety of mid- and high-waisted styles came into the dressing room and 3 pairs won me over.

The Key To Transitional Dressing

IStock_000015675587XSmall
Sorry girls, but it's time to face the music and "Baby, it's cold outside". Not freezing, granted, but cold. Even in the luscious fall sunshine, it's fair to say that summer is over. So - like it or not - you need to start wearing socks. I mean it. I love slipping my bare feet into flats as much as the next girl, but it's over. Put on some socks.

A Blast From The Past I’m Happy To See Again: The Cougar Pillow Boot

Pillowboot This Limited Edition Pillow Boot with the classic red fleece lining can be yours for $270.

There’s no other season that pulls me to the mall for shopping the way the fall does. I am always excited by the prospect of cozy new sweaters, coats and boots without fail. And even though I’ve already purchased a couple of pairs of boots for the cold weather ahead, I got a little giddy when I opened my mail today.

The Cougar Pillow Boot we all know and love from childhood is back!

A Brief Retrospective Of My Most Regrettable Schoolgirl Styles

Laura-Lanktree-6yrs
The cuter years: a Little House On The Prairie-esque dress hand-smocked by my mom for this grade one class photo. You'll have to pay me to see what progressed from here.

If I'm ever feeling too good about myself, there is a secret weapon that will put me back in place: my school photos…grades 3 through 11 to be exact.

I didn't suffer from hair tragedies like so many of my friends. My older sister's chia pet 'do had warned me away from perms and my friend's Vidal Sassoon request that led to a year-long lopsided look taught me to keep me hair long and brown as it was. Beyond a row of plastic barrettes to help my growing bangs in grade one, I played it pretty safe on the beauty front. When it comes to clothing however, that was a different story.

Are You "Too Pretty" To Be A Smart Shopper?

JC Penney

The JC. Penney "Too Pretty" top that caused a media storm this week. I wonder if anyone noticed the "Justin Beaver" t-shirt underneath it. Seems equally inappropriate, no?

I went out on the market the other day to see what was fresh for fall and came upon an ultra-soft tank silk screened with the image of a skull. Sometimes I'm in a death metal kind of mood (read foul), so I picked it up to check the price (always my second move upon spotting a wanted item). The price was right, but on closer inspection I noticed a tiny looped cross on the skull's forehead. Huh. I know that means something, I thought, but I can't remember what. And so I put the tank back in its place and walked away empty-handed.

I've always been a mildly conscientious shopper, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one.

3 Summer Items That Can Easily Transition To Your Fall Wardrobe

No one is less enthused about summer's end than I, but it became an inescapable truth today: my sister, a wonderful teacher, spend the morning at school dusting off her shelves.  And so the end is near.

The excitement of fall clothes is typically the only thing that numbs the pain, but in this Canadian climate, sometimes it's tough to put those summer buys into storage after wearing them for only 3 short months. Luckily it's easy to transition many summer pieces into fall with a few simple accessories. Here's how:

Diesel's New Jogging Jeans: Maybe We Can Have It All!

Womens-joggs

Diesel Joggs for women.

Diesel has come up with a new product named Joggs. The string-tied bottoms, available for men and women, are essentially a hybrid of jeans and jogging pants, so in theory, the best thing ever invented. But see, I'm torn: on one hand, yes, the fusion of jogging pants and denim is a dream come true—comfortable effort. Sold. But on the other hand, maybe effort isn't meant to be comfortable?

Accessories Update: 5 New Styles To Add To Your Jewelry Arsenal

I've always been obsessed with jewelry: when I was young I used to sort through my mom's precious gems trying them on for size and over the years I've requested new rings and necklaces for every big occasion.

Most recently I've begun collecting a new piece from each place that I travel, and on my last few trips I've picked up some unexpected treasures—not traditional pieces like bracelets and earrings, but new styles like hand bracelets and knuckle busters that I now feel are vital in rounding out my jewelry arsenal.

These new gems have opened up my eyes to some amazing designers and surprising shapes. Here are my top 5 picks for updating your jewelry this fall:

#1 The Fingertip Ring: My pick comes from L.A.-based designer Rossmore. I spent nearly two full days driving around the City of Angels in search of this triangle style (pictured above, middle) after spotting her catalogue at Fred Segal. Rossmore hand-cut and crafted stacking rings, rossmore.bigcartel.com.

Trending: Cobalt Blue

Two major colours you're about to see tons of this fall are cobalt blue and emerald green. I love them both equally, but my first purchase for fall is blue (the lovely BCBGeneration suede pumps below, in fact), so let's first take a look at my top picks to give your wardrobe the blues, and next week we'll head to the Emerald City!
