Progress: Loblaw Inc. Signs Bangladesh Fire And Safety Deal

20130510_zaf_x99_170
This woman was found alive in the rubble 17 days after the building's collapse.

Since we first reported on the disastrous building collapse in Bangladesh, the death toll has risen to over 1,100 people. Somehow the word 'disaster' no longer seems appropriate to describe the fallen complex that included a garment factory where Canada's Loblaw Inc. was among retailers employing the now-deceased. Something bigger - more grave - is warranted, because this is a disaster of epic proportions.

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Accused Of Discrimination, Again

 IStock_000017985639XSmall

Young muscled men often roam the A&F sales floors topless.

It's no secret that Abercrombie & Fitch favours young fit models in their ad campaigns, but according to Robin Lewis, author of The New Rules of Retail, the plus-sized snub is more intentional than we may think. In her new book, Lewis alleges that CEO Mike Jeffries "doesn't want larger people shopping in his store[s], he wants thin and beautiful people."

Lululemon Athletica Facing Lawsuit

IStock_000015969155XSmall
A few weeks ago Lululemon was forced to recall 17% of their black Luon pants because the fabric was too sheer. At the time, the fiasco was predicted to eventually cost the company close to 40 million dollars, but now - thanks to new information of a hefty bonus plan put into place within days of the recall - things just got a lot more costly.

A Big Week For Diversity

NBA centre Jason Collins came out as a gay man on the cover of Sports Illustrated Monday. His heralding story was heard loudly over various media channels with everyone from Great Aunt Betty to President Obama applauding with resounding cheer.

For H&M's turn at diversity this week, the message is much more subtle. There, on the retailer's homepage, sits a plus-sized model in beachwear with no mention of the words "plus" or "sized" anywhere near. While this message hasn't been heard quite as loudly as Jason's, for women facing a notoriously slim-model-lovin' fashion industry, the impact has equal value.

The Real Cost Of Cheap Labour

20130425_zaf_x99_154
Maybe it's time we stop ignoring the expense of cheap labour. Sure - it means fast fashion for a fraction of the designer price, but it's costing lives.

Yesterday a garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh, killing over 230 people with many more currently unaccounted for. Add this disaster to the factory fire in Bangladesh six months ago that took over 100 lives - as well as a second fire two months later that killed seven - and it's time for the fashion industry to start reevaluating its way of doing things.

Get the Look: Fashion in "The Great Gatsby"

The Great Gatsby
I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely got Gatsby fever. I fell in love with the story back in the 10th grade and have continued to be obsessed with the Roaring ‘20s ever since – especially the fashion.

Not surprisingly, there has been a ton of buzz surrounding the fashion in Baz Lurhmann’s remake of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s
The Great Gatsby (in theatres May 10th). Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin collaborated with Tiffany & Co. for the jewels and Brooks Brothers for the menswear seen in the film adaptation of the classic American novel -- a nod to the authenticity of the film, as F. Scott Fitzgerald was a customer of both brands.

Compulsive Buying Disorder Gets A Gross Exposé

IStock_000018313530XSmallThe shiny interlocking Gs that Bissinger claims lured him in.

Confessions of A Shopaholic got the real life treatment recently when Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger admitted to a compulsive shopping habit via the April edition of GQ. His confession entails 81 leather jackets, 75 pairs of boots, 32 pairs of haute couture jeans, 10 evening jackets, and 115 pairs of leather gloves, totalling $638,412.97 in designer goods, mainly from the house of Gucci. That's a whole lot of interlocking Gs.

Are Models Eating Kleenex To Stay Thin?

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.44.15 PM
Modelling may seem like a straight forward gig, but there are many pressures that lie beyond the job description—mainly the overwhelming push to stay young, relevant, and - most importantly - thin. In her new tell-all book, The Vogue Factor, former Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements is alleging that the rumoured extremes at which these young women go to in order to keep the scale at bay are much more fact than fiction.

According to Clements, many models starve themselves regularly, sometimes eating only tissue - yes, as in Kleenex - to feel full. The former editor also reveals tales of multi-day shoots where models consumed zero calories, as well as a term tossed around the Vogue offices: 'Paris thin', meaning 'very'.

The Battle To Dress Jon Hamm's Freeballs

20130326-jon-hamm-04-x306-1364319474
For those of you unfamiliar with the term "freeballing" it refers to a man sans-underwear. It's also a look that Jon Hamm, a.k.a. Don Draper, is incredibly fond of. In photo after photo, it's easy to spot the Mad Men star's package roaming free in his pants as he smiles and waves contently to the paparazzi.

Despite his personal comfort, however, it has led to the discomfort of those faced with the rather distracting bulge. Hilariously enough, according to TMZ, this has now created a battle in the men's underwear world with Fruit of the Loom and Jockey going head-to-head in a bid to cover Hamm's, well, head.
