Mark's Spring/Summer 2012 Preview

With Groundhog Day behind us and spring just around the corner, we are definitely turning our eyes to spring fashion - bright colors, floral prints and, of course, thoughts of warmer days.

Last week, we were able to attend a spring/summer fashion preview for Mark's. As soon as we walked in, we fell in love with the eye-catching colours and super-cute styles.

Here's a closer look at some of our favourites:

Nike Releases New Marty McFly Shoe

Michael You can now get your very own pair of Marty McFly shoes via an eBay auction for charity.

I have a co-worker who loves anything and everything about Back To The Future. Yes, I’m talking about the films that were released back in the ‘80s starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. So why am I bringing this up now and on a beauty and fashion blog? A new Back To The Future-inspired shoe has just been unveiled by Nike.

And it’s crazy and people are already so pumped up by its release.

A Blast From The Past I’m Happy To See Again: The Cougar Pillow Boot

Pillowboot This Limited Edition Pillow Boot with the classic red fleece lining can be yours for $270.

There’s no other season that pulls me to the mall for shopping the way the fall does. I am always excited by the prospect of cozy new sweaters, coats and boots without fail. And even though I’ve already purchased a couple of pairs of boots for the cold weather ahead, I got a little giddy when I opened my mail today.

The Cougar Pillow Boot we all know and love from childhood is back!

Colour and Creativity Abound At The Crystal Light Designer Purse Challenge

Ask anyone who knows me what my fashion weakness is and they’ll tell you without any hesitation that it’s purses. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved carrying a purse and my closet is full of them in every shape, size, brand and colour.

My eyes lit up when I saw the invitation to the Crystal Light Designer Purse Challenge this week where I got to see eight amazing purses designed by fashion students. As I checked out the purses it really got me thinking about how I used to dream of being a fashion designer. In the long run, I didn’t end up going that route, but the designs really inspired me and made think about where my inspirations would have come from.

The creativity and professional look of the bags completely blew me away and, best of all, they were inspired by the flavours of Crystal Light (yes, I’m talking about the fruit flavouring you add to water). This may sound a bit unusual at first, but just wait until you see the designs!

Here’s a look at a few of my favourites:

Royal Wedding Fans Sure Know How To Dress

You don’t have to be in the royal family, or even in the UK, to sport a stunning fascinator, fancy hairband or hat. Nearly 300 people put on their finest outfits to attend a royal wedding themed taping of The Marilyn Show in Toronto this morning.

Although chilly in the outdoor tent, I felt perfectly dressed in my black dress, white cardigan and kitten heel pumps, but I was nowhere near as creative or fun as the majority of the show’s audience.

Of course, none of us could look as stunning as Kate Middleton in a dress designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, that was “ to die for”, in the words of Jeanne Beker. But I did spot plenty of cute party dresses and headpieces. Here’s some of what I saw.

Our Favourite Joe Fresh Picks For Fall/Winter 2011

It should come as no surprise that the Joe Fresh show at Toronto’s LG Fashion Week Tuesday night was one hot ticket. Arguably the most accessible clothing line in Canada – but doesn’t it make grocery shopping so much more fun? – Joe packs a whole lot of style and adorableness into prices that are hard to resist. The Fall show featured classic looks, with swing coats, sparkly minis, lots of knits and some cozy-looking sweaters. Classic colours too – lots of camel, grey and black with fantastic hits of colour and gold accents (even gold-painted jeans!). Yes, the show opened with what has become Joe’s trademark orange but also, some fabulous jade and indigos that will definitely take the blah out of fall. Since we (Joanna and Alyssa) were lucky enough to snag a seat, here’s a peek at some of our faves…

The cure for man hands (that’s man-approved!)

I have clammy hands. They used to make me self-conscious and really nervous about shaking hands when meeting new people but I’ve come to really appreciate them, especially during the winter. I know I’m truly one of the lucky ones who can make it through the season without having to slather my hands in moisturizer to get rid of that annoying red and itchy dryness.

Loving this: Silpada’s 2010-2011 jewelry line

Ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you that when it comes to jewelry, I’m a pretty Plain Jane. I stick to the basics: simple studs, a bracelet or necklace, my wedding and engagement rings and my Tiffany heart ring. If you catch me in any more than that, it’s likely because a friend let me borrow something or wanted to add some spice to my look.

So it came as much as surprise to me as it will to you to learn that when I had the opportunity to look at (and try on!) hundreds of beautiful jewelry pieces last week, I honestly got a little giddy, envisioning how I could dress my wardrobe up or down with layers, chunky pieces and a little bling.

Coveting these: Kendra Scott Turquoise Earrings

I’m not a big fan of dangly earrings. In fact, most days you’ll see me wearing my small heart studs from Tiffany without giving it a second thought. But every now and then an earring comes along that really makes me think twice about my earring collection (or lack thereof).

Is There an Age Minimum for Fashion Self-Determination?

Yesterday was pretty uneventful for the most part having made it through the workday with no major issues, but things changed on the bus ride home when I was one-upped, style wise, by the five-year-old sitting across from me.
