Mark's Spring/Summer 2012 Preview

With Groundhog Day behind us and spring just around the corner, we are definitely turning our eyes to spring fashion - bright colors, floral prints and, of course, thoughts of warmer days.

Last week, we were able to attend a spring/summer fashion preview for Mark's. As soon as we walked in, we fell in love with the eye-catching colours and super-cute styles.

Here's a closer look at some of our favourites:

Axe Body Spray…For Women?

Screen shot 2012-01-09 at 11.06.50 PM
A screen-grab from the new Axe Anarchy ad.

Unilever, parent company to brands like Axe, Dove, Sunlight, and Degree, is well known for its award-winning advertising. The Dove Campaign For Real Beauty as well as the Axe Body Spray ads that show the aggressively fragrant men's products rendering women helpless to its draw are likely the two best known, which is a problem when you line up the messages back to back. How can one company promote real beauty for real women and show them as mindless objects at the same time?

Many journalists and feminist groups have put this question to Unilever in the past and the company has regretfully taken the heat… which is the very first thing that came to mind when I read today that Axe is set to introduce a new product, this time for women.

Self-Cleaning Clothes

IStock_000015049881XSmall
Apparently researchers in China have developed a new solution to tedious laundry: self-cleaning clothes. That's right, the Jetson age is truly upon us.

Using a chemical called titanium dioxide, a coating can be applied to the outside of cotton materials causing them to self-clean, while removing stains and odours. The reaction takes place when the coating is exposed to sunlight and proved very successful in testing.

Breakfast at Tiffany's: A peek at Tiffany & Co.'s new leather collection

Moooon River, wider than a mile, I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker, wherever you're going I'm going your way.

Tiffanys_display_cases
Sparkling juice, hors d’oeuvres and breakfast at Tiffany’s, oh my!

When I first got the invite to breakfast at the iconic New York jewellers’ Toronto store, I didn’t quite know what to expect. But, last week, waiting outside the front of the store, I channelled my best Holly Golightly and stepped inside the security-protected revolving doors (albeit sans pastry and coffee in hand).

A Blast From The Past I’m Happy To See Again: The Cougar Pillow Boot

Pillowboot This Limited Edition Pillow Boot with the classic red fleece lining can be yours for $270.

There’s no other season that pulls me to the mall for shopping the way the fall does. I am always excited by the prospect of cozy new sweaters, coats and boots without fail. And even though I’ve already purchased a couple of pairs of boots for the cold weather ahead, I got a little giddy when I opened my mail today.

The Cougar Pillow Boot we all know and love from childhood is back!

Spanx For The Gym? No Thanx!

SpanxThe new Spanx Wrap & Go Shaper for the gym.

Admittedly, it's been a long time since I stepped foot in a gym. I gave up my membership years ago in favour of a yoga studio (which I've also been embarrassingly absent from these days).

What I do remember most about my classic fitness on the elliptical, though, are the outfits. Hot-to-trot gals strutted around the weight room in spandex pants and barely-there bra tops, often with their hair perfectly pulled back and their faces far too polished to be makeup-free. Rather than feel embarrassed by my usual ribbed tank-meets-cut-off sweat shorts get-up, I always felt embarrassed for them instead. I mean, it's understandable to want to show off your hard work, but could your clothes get any tighter? Oh yes they can. And they just did.

My New Favourite Bronzer

Stila_bronzer

Hello sun! Hello sundress! At least that's what I said when I woke up yesterday morning and slipped on a brand new ballerina-style bodiced-dress covered in oversized  beige and blush florals. I was feeling oh-so-Chloé until I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Some ghostly gal had stolen my dress! Oh wait, that was me.

How Much Are Your Boobs Worth? Introducing The World's Most Ridiculously Priced Bra

Eternal-Love-2 Eternal-Love-3

The Eternal Love Bra by BodyRock Sport, valued at $21,011.

It's not something I've ever thought about, really: the worth of my girls. I mean, I'm kind to them. They get sunscreen and daily support, as well as a yearly check in from my doctor and nightly house calls from my boyfriend (sorry mom). But when a press release for "the world's most expensive bra" came across my inbox, my first thought was: my boobs aren't worth that much.

You can now fully live in a material world, while wearing Madonna’s Material Girl clothing line. The collection has dropped exclusively into all 91 Hudson Bay stores across Canada and is co-designed by Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes ‘Lola’ Leon. Little J, aka Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl, rolled out the Fall 2010 collection as the face of Material Girl, but the Spring 2011 ads bring a fresh new model to the line. So who’s the chic new blond in the ads that you see in all The Bay stores and windows?

RW&CO. Launches Bridesmaids Dresses

Sick of ugly bridesmaids dresses? Are images of sea foam green and satin coming to mind? Canadian darling, RW&CO. has launched a Special Occasions Dress Collection for spring/summer 2011. The line is versatile and works as bridal party wear or something a guest could wear to a party. The dresses are hip and do not scream ‘Bridal Party!’ and the pricing will not leave bridesmaids emptying their bank accounts.
