Mark's Spring/Summer 2012 Preview

With Groundhog Day behind us and spring just around the corner, we are definitely turning our eyes to spring fashion - bright colors, floral prints and, of course, thoughts of warmer days.

Last week, we were able to attend a spring/summer fashion preview for Mark's. As soon as we walked in, we fell in love with the eye-catching colours and super-cute styles.

Here's a closer look at some of our favourites:

Guest Blog: I Tried It: Zax's Original Bruise Cream

Confession time: I am a klutz. As a child, it’s cute; as a teenager, it’s a phase; but as an adult, it’s embarrassing. And more importantly, it’s a hazard to my health and wardrobe!

On any given day it’s a safe bet that I will spill something, knock something over, drop something or bump into something. (If you’re thinking I should have my eye sight and depth perception checked, trust me I have.)

It’s the bumping into things that’s the worst because, in addition to being klutzy, I bruise like a peach. So you can imagine my delight when offered a chance to try out Zax’s Original Bruise Cream

Travel Chic: What To Wear On The Plane

IStock_000017364600XSmall
I've just returned from a lovely long weekend in Calgary and in light of upcoming travel for us all (they say Thanksgiving is busier than Christmas), I thought I would share a few pointers for how to dress for the flight.

A Blast From The Past I’m Happy To See Again: The Cougar Pillow Boot

Pillowboot This Limited Edition Pillow Boot with the classic red fleece lining can be yours for $270.

There’s no other season that pulls me to the mall for shopping the way the fall does. I am always excited by the prospect of cozy new sweaters, coats and boots without fail. And even though I’ve already purchased a couple of pairs of boots for the cold weather ahead, I got a little giddy when I opened my mail today.

The Cougar Pillow Boot we all know and love from childhood is back!

Tips For Retailers: 5 Easy Ways To Keep Me Coming Back

IStock_000004554966XSmall

I've been doing quite a bit of shopping lately looking for dresses to wear to summer's remaining weddings and maybe even a few goodies for fall. I used to love shopping, but lately it feels like more of a task and I think it has lost its lustre for a few specific reasons. Here they are, in no particular order (retailers take note):

Hand Fans Are So Hot Right Now

IStock_000005881282XSmall

The last few days of scorching temps have been great for people watching. I think it's so interesting to see how others cope with the heat and how they dress to bear it. Some have shocked me in their long denim pants and closed toed shoes; others have made me flinch with their nearly-naked looks; but truth be told, many have impressed me. I've seen quite a few inventive ways to beat the heat, from long airy linens à la Middle East to my new favourite: hand fans.

Are You An Overdresser? What To Wear For Every Occasion

Spl199404_001Kate Beckinsale walking her dog in high heels - no big deal.

Kate Beckinsale is notoriously overdressed. Ball gowns for movie premieres, updos for grocery runs—the works. That's why I was pleasantly surprised to see the actress, who's currently in Toronto filming Total Recall, tame her glam impulse this week for the Canadian premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. She chose a simple short black frock with black patent pumps and kept her hair long and loose. Shockingly apropos!

Many women share Kate's penchant for pouf, so I thought I'd give a lesson in how not to overdress in honour of this recent triumph.

Size Matters: How To Get The Best Fit From Your Clothes

IStock_000012938721XSmall

My closet holds every size from XXS to XXL. Most of my t-shirts double as shifts, I rarely wear the same size jeans from day to day, and when it comes to dresses—forget about it!—my waist is way smaller than my hips, so unless I want to be swimming around the top or acquiring those oh-so-tacky fabric folds across the hipline, I take size whatever to the alterations lady.

What does this have to do with you? I'm illustrating my wardrobe range so that you can feel better about honing yours in a similar fashion. As of late I'm seeing far, far too many girls sacrificing fit and comfort for the size on the label.  Let me lend you the best advice I have to give when it comes to getting the best fit: the smaller your clothes, the bigger you look.

Is Your Nail Salon Safe? The Top 3 Things To Look For

IStock_000009960524XSmall

Nail salons scare me. Every time my friends discuss their favourite mani/pedi joints, I flashback to that Twinrix commercial that warns of Hepatitis B living on salon surfaces. Since I'm not the only germaphobe out there, I sat down in Ashley Stewart's pedicure chair at the historic Windermere House's new Sanctuary Spa in Muskoka, Ontario for a foot rub and the 411 on nail salon safety.

Do you wear a sun hat? I don’t (but these might convince me)

Ever since I turned 30, I’ve been much better about sunscreen than I used to be. I may not have slathered on the baby oil and used foil reflectors like my sun-happy parents did back in the day, but in my carefree youth, I wore SPF 8, which now sounds just as crazy. I graduated to 15 sometime around the end of high school and to 30 in my mid-20s. Lately I’ve been all about the 50, and where I used to only apply sunscreen when I was (ahem) sunbathing, I now use it most days.
