Should Fashion Be Seasonless?

Wenn20131608
A look from Michael Kors' Fall '13 collection that could easily pass for spring.

We've all heard the term "seasonless dressing", and given this ever-changing wacky weather, the concept seems to make more and more sense. At least Michael Kors certainly thinks so.

The designer was in Toronto this week for a whirlwind visit to his Bloor Street boutique, as well as Holt Renfrew's flagship store. I was lucky enough to hear him speak to the Holts team while models walked in a few key looks from his latest collections, and when the spring '13 dresses ended and fall '13 appeared, MK quickly pointed out that the clothes didn't much change. Sure, there was a new theme and new colours, but we continued to see separates with long sleeves, no sleeves, and hemlines at every length. According to Michael, rather than announcing a new season, he'd rather simply say: Look, I made new clothes!

5 Tips For Transitional Dressing

Wenn20283627Model Alessandra Ambrosio in the perfect transitional outfit with a light jacket, scarf, and ankle skimmers.

The sun has finally come out to play and we're all just so excited that we forgot to put our clothes on! That's right - I see you out there in your short shorts and muscle tanks acting like it's mid-July. Listen, I'm just as excited as anyone to peel off the winter coat, but there are a few ground rules for transitional dressing; the main one being that it's a transition.

Here are a few of my favourite ways to ease into the warmth:

Is Coachella Style Getting Stale?

Wenn3830460
Vanessa Hudgens at Coachella in 2012.

Prepare yourselves for an onslaught of feathers and cut-offs—Coachella has arrived. The annual music festival, which takes place in Indio, California, is built in the tradition of Woodstock and well known for bringing out the flower child in today's modern music lover...plus all those non-music lovers who go for the street style photo ops. Heck, where else can you don face paint, floral wreaths, and Ray-Bans with such unabashed enthusiasm?

Trend To Love: Sneakers

Very few fashion trends scream of comfort, so when there's finally a chic and cozy option to explore, I'm all about it. Here are a few easy ways to indulge in the sneaker trend this season:

THE WEDGE: The wedge sneaker is everywhere right now and no wonder: it offers cushioned support and a lift all at once. Styles range from lace-ups to velcro and one-tone to colour-blocked with embellishments all-over, leaving something for everyone. Paired with skinny jeans and a tee, these shoes can carry you straight from day to night.
MY PICK: Graziana, Chism, and Numata (from left), all available at Aldo.

The Power Of A "Like": Buyers Tune In To Social Media

20121002_kza_kw1_1233
I'm kind of obsessed with Instagram, and by kind of, I mean completely. I refresh my feed of photos every time there is a pause in the day, just to see what's what and "like" along the way. I never really put much thought into my "likes" - if I like it, I "like" it - but in this consumer-driven world, that kind of insight is gold.

Buyers and retailers are no longer fretting over hours of spread sheets and trend reports to decide which items should stock their shelves for the coming season. Instead, all they need to do is closely monitor their news feeds throughout fashion week and tick off the items that score the most clicks, tweets, and retweets on the order list.

Start Doing Your Sit-Ups, Ladies—Midriffs Are Hot For Spring 2013

Wenn5908017

Mara Hoffman Spring/Summer 2013 from New York Fashion Week.

The only consolation to September's colder weather is that the spring fashion shows begin, so as you pull on those wooly sweaters, you can already start day dreaming of next season's tank tops. This coming spring, however, you'll have to make that crop tops, because yes ladies, according to the runways of New York, next season is all about the midriff. Start doing those crunches now.

More Skin Than Clothing At The Menswear Shows

Versace Spring 2013 at left and Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2013 at right.

The Spring 2013 Menswear Collections are underway in Milan and considering that fashion is the goal at these things, there sure doesn't seem to be very much of it going around. Instead, the general theme is skin with Dolce & Gabbana models going topless and Versace's boys hitting the catwalk pants-free.
