Is Coco Rocha Too Thin To Rep Mad Men Style?

Screen Shot 2013-02-28 at 6.16.46 PM
Canada's favourite model export, Coco Rocha, is the new face of Banana Republic's Mad Men collection, but was she the best pick? That's what some are debating now that the ads have been released, revealing her slim figure as a representation of TV's curviest leading ladies.

Having worked in fashion for many years, I know that brands and editors strive to cast plus-sized models in their pages, but there is always talk of it needing to be "the right fit". In this case, I can't think of a better one.

GIRLS' Novel Approach To Costume Design

Screen shot 2012-05-28 at 11.35.06 PM

Prada, Gucci, Versace, Dior—it's the stuff that dreams are made of and it also comprised the wardrobe of one Carrie Bradshaw, star of Sex and The City, New York's best dressed struggling writer (pre-season 6 book deal). I never understood how it was that Carrie sat up in her humongous-by-any-New-York-standards Manhattan apartment draped in designer with a social calendar that would elicit prostitution to cover. As good as it looked, it wasn't realistic.

But now there's a new foursome in Manhattan, one that would cringe to hear the Sex and The City comparison (except for Charlotte's mini-me Shoshanna, but well there are four of them living and dating in the Big Apple, so…I'll go on.) These twenty-somethings are so spot-on that it's hard not to call the show they reign, HBO's GIRLS, reality TV. Or at least what reality TV would be like if it were real. Point being, these girls  don't wear designer, they wear anything they can afford that looks halfway okay. They dress like girls who are truly living (read: surviving) in New York, sweating it out from pay cheque to pay cheque.

The Twenties Are Back And More Stylish Than Ever

0063141044b
Lately I've been having a love affair with the 1920s and it appears I'm not the only one. Woody Allen just gave the decade a major nod in Midnight In Paris; Boardwalk Empire has been heating up the ratings with its look back on the roaring years of prohibition; The Vampire Diaries has been flashing back to the years of flappers and coat tails; Gucci is celebrating its 90th anniversary with G Gucci 1921, a line the revives its classic vintage looks from year one; and Baz Lurhman is finally filming his long awaited remake of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. With the film's release many months away - perhaps even years - it looks like we're just on the cusp of this Twenties revival.

Kim Kardashian Asks Wedding Guests To Wear Black Or White—Did She Cross The Line?

Spl308244_014
Newlyweds Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries at LAX departing for their honeymoon.

In case you haven't heard, Kim Kardashian got married this weekend. If you were within five feet of a computer or television, however, you've no doubt already been subjected to the news, as well as the live updates throughout the ceremony, leaving nothing sacred in her union to NBA player Kris Humphries. She's klassy isn't she that Kim?

Since Saturday's full-on Kardashian assault I've been bemoaning their inability to keep anything in the family as they truck along the E! cameras to every photo shoot, sacrament, and doctor's appointment. But where I take issue with Kardashian's lack of tact in turning her wedding into a media circus, many others are calling her out because of another decidedly tacky move: apparently the pint-sized reality star demanded that all of her wedding guests be dressed in either black or white. The request caused internet outrage with one unhappy Huffington Post reader commenting: "Who does she think she is…the Queen of England?"

Wedding Gown Predictions For Kim Kardashian

Spl292416_009

Kim Kardashian and bridal guru Vera Wang were "caught" by the paparazzi in New York City this week leading everyone to believe that the two were discussing Kim's wedding gown for her upcoming nuptials to NBA player Kris Humphries.

Given the reality star's gift for being conspicuous, unless there's a "Kim fires Vera" episode to Keeping Up With The Kardashians season 6, odds are pretty good that we now know who the dress designer is, but that doesn't mean that we know what it will look like. Given Kim's signature styles, however, I'm venturing to take a few guesses:

Street Style: Lainey Gossip's Loyal Fans Bring Out Their Best Fashions For SMUT Soirée 2011

Insider Hollywood information wasn't the only thing in high demand at The Society Toronto's 6th annual SMUT Soirée this week. The gossip session also featured a Style Award this year, so the Smut Hounds (as Lainey, aka  Elaine Lui who writes the popular blog laineygossip.com and hosts the event, lovingly calls them) took instruction and dressed to impress.

With a $2000 gift certificate to The Bay on the line, brightly coloured frocks, adorable cocktail dresses, and too-cute onesies piled into the gorgeous outdoor space at Toronto's Evergreen Brick Works. Luckily The Society's gorgeous founders, Ashley Dempster and Amanda Blakley, as well as Toronto Director Martina Stritesky, were disqualified from the running since they stole the style spotlight, as always. Lainey, and her eTalk crew (she acts as a regular correspondent for the entertainment show) were also out in high style. She was sporting a pair of Alexander Wang heels I've been eyeing for months, while producer Sasha Tong, who was one of the Style Award judges alongside The Bay's Christopher Sherman, looked perfectly chic with a turquoise pendant popping against a short grey frock.

So who took home the $2000 in the end? Tong and Sherman narrowed it down to four lucky finalists and Lainey's readers voted for the winner currently on display at Laineygossip.com. But before you go, scroll through the pics below for the final four and some other stylish favourites:

Royal Wedding Fans Sure Know How To Dress

You don’t have to be in the royal family, or even in the UK, to sport a stunning fascinator, fancy hairband or hat. Nearly 300 people put on their finest outfits to attend a royal wedding themed taping of The Marilyn Show in Toronto this morning.

Although chilly in the outdoor tent, I felt perfectly dressed in my black dress, white cardigan and kitten heel pumps, but I was nowhere near as creative or fun as the majority of the show’s audience.

Of course, none of us could look as stunning as Kate Middleton in a dress designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, that was “ to die for”, in the words of Jeanne Beker. But I did spot plenty of cute party dresses and headpieces. Here’s some of what I saw.

Are Your Legs Too Loud For The Office?

No you didn’t misread that headline, it is implying that your legs may be speaking volumes about you if you are amongst those ladies who have been embracing the textures hosiery trend that has been building momentum since last winter. Or, at least, that is the theory behind a recent article by The Wall Street Journal’s Christine Binkley entitled “What Your Legs Say About You”…

Bringing Sexy Back: What’s The Hottest Body Part To Expose?

For as long as I can remember, if a starlet wanted to get a little attention in the press all she really had to do was slip into a dress that was more risqué than we had previously seen. Slowly, but surely, though, this exercise in provocative dressing continued upping the ante until finally we got to the point where pants were suddenly optional on a regular Friday night on the town—thanks so much for that Lady Gaga. Thankfully, though, it would appear that as of late Hollywood trendsetters are finding a refreshing (and dare I say classy) way to expose some skin. Check it out after the jump.

Have You Heard of Bootights? Oprah Says They Are Your Next Must-Have

When Oprah declares a “favourite thing” people sit up and take note. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure why all the time. Seriously, how many years in a row can a cable-knit Ralph Lauren sweater and Ugg boots be two of the best things available in the retail world!? But hey, it’s a fact that Oprah’s endorsement does big things for a company and the lady does come across some pretty awesome products that are well deserving of praise from time to time.
